wookie jr. may not be the smoothest player on the court, but he has a knack for the game, makes baskets, hustles, shoots the 3, and rebounds well. He's a really good player. Not to mention only a freshman. Not many freshmen are being relied on to carry their team like Doug is. He's FOY hands down.

Cold, McD had one of his poorer games at WSU. True, he is not a physical specimen nor the most skilled player in the league. What he has is the inate basketball sense possessed by very few. He does not lead the league in rebounding because he can leap out of the gym to snare boards. He leads the league, because of his tenacity, his seemingly uncanny ability to be in the right place, and because he times his jump better than most. While he is not silky-smooth, he makes the ugly baskets. Several of the shots he missed at WSU, he has been knocking down at a pretty good clip throughout the year.

McDermott is in every sense of the word a blue-collar player. Many games, I see the stats after and wonder where the points and rebounds came from, because you just don't notice that he is piling up the points and boards during the course of a game. While in the context of watching a single game, I can see where it is pretty easy to come away saying you aren't impressed with the skill set. However, if you watch him play throughout the season, you come to see the intangibles that make him a really good basketball player. He is the third freshman in the entire history of the league to score 400 points and grab 200 rebounds. Only on selection Sunday is basketball a beauty contest. Otherwise, it is still about results.

McDermott by wide margin, Rice, Odum.

Given a choice between these players, i would pick McDermott 10 of 10 times to start a team.

I went looking for what other sources there were that might give some insight ...unbiased insight to how you could rank the players in our conference. I came across statsheet.com. It is an independent site that tracks and follows all the D1 conferences. They rate through a computer how well teams and players in each conference are doing. They also have a player of the week, sixth man of the week and a freshman of the week. If you want to be fair to the players that are being talked about on here go to your schools site after logging on their site and do your own research. You'll see the same names mentioned for freshman of the year Odum, Rice and McDermott mentioned most often. Remember computer generated unbiased information. They don't care one bit who gets player of the week or Freshman of the Year. Scroll through each week. Mr. Odum has five freshman of the week awards, Mr. Rice has three freshman of the week awards, Mr. McDermott has two freshman of the week awards. Don't take my word for it research it yourself. It's not as cut and dry as some of you imply. Missouri Valley Conference back on the rise....Wishing everyone luck in ST LOUIE....be safe!

I would certainly take the lil' wookie on my team, but he wouldn't score as much playing for the Shockers. Like the TV commentator said the other night, the Shockers have several players that would average 18+ ppg on less talented teams. Players like Kyles, Smith, and Blair would be 1st string on any other team in the Valley. IMO Kyles should be on a team where he is the goto guy. He could easily put up 30 if left to "run the show".

In my opinion the Shockers have underperformed this year and that is saying something. Coach BJ would be undefeated with this team but he never would have been able to recruit them. I guess I'll take the recruiter over the game coach.

Has anyone realisticly suggested Odum for first team All-Valley?
Almost all consider McD All-Valley first team.

He's not even considered for 2nd team All-Valley. Kwadzo is a 1st teamer and most say AY who leads the league in assists is second team.
