How has it changed it? Before they got paid a player might choose to star at Bradley instead of getting paid to be just another guy at a power 6 school. My guess is that you are primarily a fan of some power 6 team. I think you are alone in thinking that the portal is not bad for the Valley and will just get worse. Also "ever" is along time. There was a time when the Valley was arguably the best conference in the country. A number of the teams in the conference have lost half of their team in the last two years.

I do think the portal has the potential to slow down after the extra COVID year players have exhausted their eligibility. It may take a year or two afterward, but I think it'll regress a bit.

NIL is simply another illustration of the ever-growing resource divide between those with lucrative television contracts and those without. We've always seen it in some ways, but they explosion of dollars into college athletics has altered the landscape dramatically.

I personally think the Big Ten Network's launch is the single-most significant event in the resource divide, with it succeeding with its distribution plan and subsequent television negotiations yielding massive infusions of cash to the other power leagues.

At some point, it's untenable for Division I to continue as it is, IMO, of course.

MVC teams are undoubtedly at a disadvantage in this space.

The Valley was the best conference in the country in the 50's and 60's. That was back when a lot of teams in the South didn't want black players.

You are speaking with emotion - not reason. Since the 1990's the MVC has ALWAYS been below the P5 conferences. The NIL and portal don't change that. Not in the least. I love the Valley but the majority of fans are all over the place emotionally.

There were also creative ways players got paid without getting paid over the past 7 decades as well.

Also, there was a time when transfers were getting a little out of hand, and the 5/8 rule was instituted, which the Valley benefitted from more than perhaps any other league in the country. And then they repealed that after 2006, and it's been trickle drip stream flood.

And I've argued this on the Bradley board, the real danger for the Valley - and I agree with Tribe overall though - is that NIL actually arguably benefits much smaller leagues to an extent where a kid that playing in the NCAA is a big deal, it's much easier to build a juggernaut and guarantee that bid in a league like the NEC or Summit than in the Valley. But the 96-team tournament offsets that some as the Valley should be able to get 2-3 teams in most years, if they schedule responsibly.

Yeah, but he's also the rare dude looking for the best education. Which also makes Nebraska a bit of a head scratcher, but still better than Iowa. But the Dutch sure do like hanging around cows.

Montgomery transfers from #72 NET to #265 NET.

Mast transfers from #72 NET to #92 NET.

Right.

This is also a part of the portal that will settle in the future as well. Guys will learn not to oversell themselves and end up in a worse situation.

The portal and NIL are still very new.

Bradley will have a hard time replacing Mast of course. Montgomery - that won't be a problem.

Obviously it hasn't rearranged the power structure in college sports. But it has made an existing gap between the Power 5 and everyone else, much, much bigger.

Just because a river is already flowing in one direction doesn't mean that blowing up the dam doesn't make a difference.

Just so people know, Zek Montgomery went to Rhode Island. They finished one game in front of Loyola in the A-10 this year, and we all know how bad Loyola was. It appears their top 2-3 players all transferred out, so he should get the opportunity for playing time.
