Because league play is a more equitable barometer for comparing performances.

I don't know who the FOY should be, but if I were a voter, I'd weigh MVC games more than nonconference, generally anyway.

Most voters look primarily at conference only games for all awards, not just all freshman. Sure, non-conference is considered, but like TylerDurden said, its a more consistent barometer. For example, Northern Iowa had the hardest Non-Con SOS and Southern Illinois had the easiest. One could make an argument that Bowen Bon might have been able to put up closer numbers to Xavier Johnson had he played the same teams he did, thus giving him a more solid case for POY. (not a perfect example, I know, but it gets the point across)

Schweiger - 12.4
Bailey - 10.6
Overton - 10.1
Hughes - 6.9
Williamson - 6.4
Burch - 6.0
Kramer - 6.0
Pock - 4.8
Kizinger - 4.6
Rogers - 3.2

Sepp 4.4 per game
Weatherspoon - 4.3 Both of these Valpo freshmen moved from little early season playing time to Valley starting roles.

Now do Rebounds.

I don’t really want to as I don’t really care that much.

The Freshmen who play more on crappier teams are going to have more chances to score, etc.

So is it easier to get more rebounds on a crappier team?

Here are the Freshman Rebound Leaders:

Schwieger 7.11 #5 in MVC

No other freshmen are listed in the Top 20 so don’t know how many they are averaging.

Yes. Because you are playing more minutes.

More minutes = more stats.

Two things can be true.

Cooper Schweiger can be having a nice season deserving of awards.

Cooper Schweiger also gets to play a lot of minutes and put up numbers because Valpo isn't very good.

Yes. Because you are playing more minutes.

More minutes = more stats.

So playing on a bad team:
Helps you score more points: 12.4
Get more Rebounds: 7.11 (4th in MVC)

Does playing on a bad team help make you have the:
4th highest Free Throw Percentage (.857) in the conference?
7th highest Shooting Percentage (.531) in the conference?

In a way - yes. You have to play enough minutes and then get enough attempts to qualify for rate/% based stats.

Two quick examples - Demarion Burch is shooting 55.3% from the field. Nick Kramer is shooting 40% from three. However, neither doesn't have enough attempts to qualify among the leaders - which often is a direct result of playing time.

BTW - no one here is suggesting Cooper Schwieger isn't having a good season. He is. I'm not sure what your point is.

Atlason with a fine game yesterday. Should his hat be thrown in the ring?

Watched Schweiger and Clay play head to head yesterday and remembered that Donovan and Ben Krikke were both freshman on the 19-20 Valpo team that went to the MVC championship game. Clay was first team MCV freshman and Ben was an also ran. Krikke averaged 16.5 minutes per game (33 game season) and Clay started 31 games and averaged just over 30 minutes. Both had pretty good numbers which are being soundly beaten by Cooper Schweiger. Of special note in their sophomore campaigns at VU is that as the quality of the 20-21 VU team declined significantly both of their overall stat sheets trended downhill as well. Could interpret this to mean that they were defended better as they were surrounded by fewer teammate scoring options?
