Brodie as Player of the Year????? I thought it was a real stretch when I saw that you listed him as first team, but POY. NFW.

Indiana State's entire starting lineup is also a choice...

Darnell Brodie is insanely efficient. Who was the last Valley player to shoot 67+% while hauling 8+ RPG? If a possession is in his hands, there's very little chance of a missed shot. And if the other team has possession, there's a good chance he's grabbing the missed shot. He averaged 1-rebound-every-3-minutes.

Other players have higher counting points, but they take and miss way more shots to get there. And they don't haul in a rebound every 3 minutes like Brodie.

Brodie's efficiency (67.1% FG, 8.2 RPG) makes him the most valuable on a minute-per-minute basis, IMO.

For context, in conference play, the league only had 7 players shoot above 50% (17% below Brodie) and only 3 players haul in 8+ RPG. Only 1 player shot within 8% of Brodie.

My updated ballot:

Coach of the Year - Schertz, Indiana State - I still feel that this should be unanimous, but someone will vote DeVries 1st.

Player of the Year - I think this is a close race.
1. DeVries, Drake
2. Avila, Indiana State
3. Johnson, SIU

Newcomer of the Year - Conwell, Indiana State

Defensive Player of the Year - Leons, Bradley

All-Conference First Team
1. DeVries, Drake
2. Johnson, SIU
3. Conwell, Indiana State
4. Avila, Indiana State
5. Leons, Bradley

All-Conference Second Team
1. Kent, Indiana State
2. Tyson, Belmont
3. Brodie, Drake
4. Deen, Bradley
5. Dia, Belmont

All-Conference Third Team
1. Mason, Missouri State
2. Hickman, Bradley
3. Swope, Indiana State
4. Larry, Indiana State
5. Stafford, Valpo

I could shuffle a few between the second and third teams and I'm not sure Stafford will get a spot, but all in all, several guys put in good performances this year. I also don't have any UNI players, which seems odd for the No. 4 seed, but I don't really see a standout.

Didn't know Jayson Kent of the Trees played 2 years at Bradley. Transfer portal has ruined college basketball.

If that is your standard wouldn’t Bradley’s Darius Hannah be a first teamer? He averaged 12.2 PPG, 6.4 RPG and shot 64% in league games. He also averaged over one blocked shot per game.

Player of the Year - I think this is a close race. Yeah this one is tough
1. DeVries, Drake
2. Avila, Indiana State
3. Johnson, SIU

Newcomer of the Year - Conwell, Indiana State - Agreed

Defensive Player of the Year - Leons, Bradley - Agreed

All-Conference First Team - 4 of these 5 are locks. Conwell, Kent,Dia,or Tyson will be the 5th
1. DeVries, Drake
2. Johnson, SIU
3. Conwell, Indiana State
4. Avila, Indiana State
5. Leons, Bradley

All-Conference Second Team - One of these could be switched to 1st team
1. Kent, Indiana State
2. Tyson, Belmont
3. Brodie, Drake
4. Deen, Bradley
5. Dia, Belmont

All-Conference Third Team - I would love for Larry to make it but it probably will be Heise
1. Mason, Missouri State
2. Hickman, Bradley
3. Swope, Indiana State
4. Larry, Indiana State
5. Stafford, Valpo

Darius also averaged 1.5 steals/game to Brodie's 0.7.

If we're really parsing these numbers out, Jayson Kent is averaging 8 rebounds/game and if he didn't shoot threes would blow both Brodie and Darius out of the water with 74% FG%.

Yo I'm a Drake fan and I love Brodie, but this argument is crazy. There's no way Brodie is POY, and I mean that as no disparagement.

Efficient bigs are noteworthy certainly, but one of the stats you're looking for is Winshare. Brodie isn't even top 2 on Drake's roster (he's 3rd), much less then MVC as a whole.
