I'm a Bears fan through and through but I just don't see how anyone could say that the year Northern Iowa beat KS and went to the sweet 16 had "the sort of luck that Jimmy Johnson has in Nascar"?? Luck had nothing to do with it. That was a GREAT team top to bottom. Period.

I meant in the postseason. They were a great Valley team, but got lucky getting past both Vegas and the best team in the country that year in Kansas. Credit them for winning and all but they were lucky to get by Kansas. That was a once in a hundred type deal.

I really don't know where you come up this stuff Casey. KU was very talented, but UNI had shown the ability to make teams play to their style and tempo all year. That was an experienced, well coached team, that had the size to contend with a BCS frontline . UNLV was not as good a team as UNI plain and simple, and KU made the mistake of not pressuring and using their athleticism to make it a 40 minute full court game, so frankly they got outcoached. Last time I looked, it is rarely the most physically talented team that wins a National Championship; it takes a combination of talent, experience, depth, and coaching to win 6 games or to make a deep run in the tourney. UNI was simply one of the better teams in the country that year based on those factors. No luck needed.

Fun fact from that game. KU's only lead of the game, 2-0 after the first possession of the game.

Yes, UNI lucked their way into the S16. :Bam:

I bet if the UNI AD, Troy Dannen, asked KU if they were up for a rematch they would shut the door in his face, grab a pair of Bill Self's underwear and cry themselves to sleep...so I guess we'll never know. I suppose all NCAA Conderella's are "lucky" huh? Butler has gotten to two straight Championships on "luck" because they beat higher seeded teams? Please, you're posts are more ridiculous than LakesDaBison because I'm fairly sure you actually believe what you say and aren't simply trying to get a rise out of us.

No luck at all involved in the UNI win over KU in 2010. There's a certain small amount of luck involved in everything but 9 times out of 10 the better team wins. And in that small % that the better team doesn't win - then the teams were pretty close to begin with.

UNI was a terrific team that year no doubt, I'm not trying to say otherwise.

I respectfully disagree with the 9 times out of 10/better team winning concept. I think in a sport like football the best team usually wins, perhaps even as high as 90 percent of the time. And at the opposite end is a sport like baseball where there is great variance. I'd put basketball somewhere in the middle of that spectrum.

But what I am essentially saying is that the NCAA Tournament would be totally different if it were a best of 7 every round. I think most would agree with that. It is the upset, one and done thing that makes march madness special but in a lot of ways it keeps us from finding out who really is the best squad.

I must say that I'm very impressed with the discipline most Bears fans have had with this issue.

I don't know how UNI got mixed up in all of this, but their run was hardly a fluke or even them "getting lucky." And this is coming from a guy that wouldn't give them any credit until their run. UNI wasn't flashy that year, Egleseder, their center had a six inch vertical, nobody else wowwed anyone, they were good shooters, fast enough to play good defense, they played together and followed the game plan. They just won. Period. A team that wins is not lucky, they prove themselves. UNI was good enough to beat anyone.
There are three rules that I live by, never get less than 12 hours sleep, never gamble with a guy who has the same first name as a city and never get involved with a chick with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Stick to that and everything else is gravy!
