Drake gets 2012 commitment--Micah Mason

Postby DUBulldog » April 24th, 2011, 5:09 pm

Micah Mason has commited to Drake....Mason is a 6-2 guard from the Pittsburgh area.

He had a game earlier this season where he scored 64 points while taking only 19 shots (17-19 from the field, 7-7 from 3-pt land, 23-24 from the line).

In a recent workout for college coaches, he hit 66-71 from 3-pt range and 95-100 free throws. He averaged 34 points per game this season as a junior.

There are apparently questions about his quickness, strength, etc, but when a kid can shoot like that, you can find a spot for him.

Sounds like the young man has some potentially serious medical issues.

Glad to see Drake is sticking with it scholarship offer. I know there is a clause the NCAA has if a player is injured and unable to continue playing for medical reasons that they can stay on sholarship but not be counted as an active player against the sholly limit. I would hope there is something in place even if its before they enter school. Otherwise, I would hope Drake is able to work out a non-athletic scholaship offer. Sounds like the kid has had a rough time already-car accident, concussion, multiple surgeries...

Yikes thats some serious stuff, I don't know how he is going to be able to play Div. I college basketball with some of those conditions. With the deaths hs and college basketball have experienced over the past few years due to players with irregular heartbeats overexerting themselves, you have to think about the kid's overall health and safety. Very glad to see Drake is still going to honor their scholarship offer, very classy and I wouldn't expect anything else.

Mason's team opened their season tonight, and it looks he's recovered from his health scare over the summer......he scored 40, although the rest of his team only scored 14 and lost by 20+.

Another Drake signee, Joey King has scored 39 and 35 in his team's first 2 games, and they are rated #1 in Minnesota.

Drake juco signee Richard Carter recently had a game with 38 points and 9 assists.

Sounds like Phelps found some guys who can score.
