holy overreaction batman.

Even with the news that the state funding will continue, I don't think I've overreacted.

ESPN ran the piece about "elimination of all athletic programs at UNI". Do you think ESPN is going to run the "state funding for UNI athletics approved" article?

RicardoDelRio predicted that SIU would sink into the abyss once Lowery had to work with his own recruits. That prediction appeared inaccurate until Lowery was actually coaching his own recruits, well those that were left.

I think it's safe to predict that UNI is going to join SIU in "the abyss". The possibility that UNI will discontinue all athletics has been raised by the President of UNI. The fact that it's not happening - at least right now - is going to scare recruits away from UNI.

I think it needed to be made clear to the Board of Regents that dropping down to D-2 or D-3 did not make financial sense. President Allen made it clear it's D-1 or nothing for UNI, and the Board of Regents has agreed.

I'm not worried about recruiting. We tend to recruit bright kids who will see through another coach trying to BS them into believing we are going to be the biggest school to drop athletics since the University of Chicago in the 1930's or whenever.

I haven't followed this story totally in the Des Moines Register. My qustion to some of the UNI fans is this, aren't basketball fans aound the state (non-UNI grads) who watch basketball creating an out cry?

It seems to me many basketball fans in Iowa I communicate with, which there are many I considered hardcore Hawkeye fans, have switched to watching UNI and Drake or both since Hawkeye basketball has been less successful, and UNI and Drake have been causing excitement in recent years. Basketball is a major form of entertainment for Iowans in the winter time. I would think a funding issue like this could become quite a political issue through out the state.

If I were a UNI fan, I wouldn't be laughing at this situation.

Tell me about that 'abyss', aargh, as you guys have been there pretty recently.

UNI isn't going anywhere. Sorry that shatters some of the shocker posters' dreams. Funny to watch certain shocker posters just flat out root against UNI.

I don't expect other fans to root for our success. So it's not a surprise that some will try and see the negatives as greater than the positives.

I'd also expect other coaches will try and use it on the recruiting trail. Will it work? Time will only tell. They certainly will have a harder time trying to claim that Jake is going to bail for the first big pay check to come along, so they'll have to try something.

But I also don't see us always cometing for the same type of kids as long as Jake sticks with his system. We certainly aren't going for the high-flyers and so-many star this or that.
