Bears get verbal from Minn. guard

Postby BEARZ77 » August 14th, 2011, 7:46 am

Coach Paul Lusk got his first H.S. recruit and Bear's 1st verbal for the 2012 class when Marcus Marshall, a 6'2 combo guard from St.Paul Johnson H.S., said he would be a Bear. Interesting get in that he started the summer a bit under the radar, then got attention on the AAU circuit picking up a number of midmajor offers including Indiana St.,Kent St., Wisc.GB, Murray St.. Recently ,Iowa, Penn St., Minn., and Butler had all shown some interest but Bears got the verbal.

Described as a scoring pg, Marcus had great shooting numbers last year at roughly 50%fg, 40% 3pt, and 89% ft and averaged 16ppg. Bears need to get a couple guards this class, so nice start for Coach Lusk.

Maybe but he does a good job of creating space. Since he showed up on our radar he is one of the guards I really hoped we could get because he has played on great teams, has good size and can really score. I also like how he went from having a few scholarship offers to having over a dozen this summer. A great start and now we have 3 more left to give.

He's definitely going to have to speed up his release if he's going to have much success there. Otherwise, he'll have to be WIDE OPEN to get a shot off. Seemed to have pretty decent handles though. Help D was nonexistent in the video.

Help D is pretty nonexistent at pretty much every level until kids get to college. I imagine he will adapt like most kids do...everyone said the same thing about Ahearn when we signed him and he was just fine. I love scorers and he is that.

Most kids don't. Most leave HS as stars. Few leave as college stars.

Then let's make sure we repeat that on all the kids who show up on the recruiting board. Since most fail to live up to their reps, but we don't know which , the safe thing is to dis all Valley recruits equally, right ?

Sorry, but I think we'll celebrate this one and the three that come after him, as I expect all other Valley schools to do with their incoming. I suspect a staff that each played D-1 basketball and all have been active recruiters before, know the kind of talent they're looking for.

Would take him over Nic Moore everyday. You can coach a shot can't coach a body what is Nic 5'7"? He should be at Quincy before its all said and done then.

That's probably as stupid a statement as the previous one; all recruits come with some warts. It's easy to sit here and pick those out . But what none of us know, is which of these kids will have the drive, coachability, and as importantly, the opportunity to advance their game and continue the success they already have had.

To me unless there are obvious issues from history regarding character, or a kid is recruited far beyond their skill level , verbals and signings are days for celebration and excitement. We have 4 years to see what their limitations are; unless a fan base is overly hyping a kid , I see no reason to get into establishing his limits before he's even played.
