Shox get another JuCo AA - this one is walking on

Postby Aargh » September 19th, 2011, 9:27 pm

Joe Mitchell played his HS ball in Wichita, went JuCo, and then signed with Ohio. That didn't work out and it seems he's eligible this year if he gets a release from his LOI. Jim Schaus, the former AD at WSU, is the AD at Ohio, so getting the release doesn't appear to be a problem. Mitchell wanted to be closer to home.

In JuCo, he averaged 18 points, 5 boards, and 4 assists as a 6'1" guard.

This gives the Shox 3 walkons that are D1-type players, Armstead (Sr trfr - not eligible this year) was a sometime starter at Oregon. Baker is a Fr walkon this year (taking RS to preserve eligibility) with a scholarship offer next year and he's considered a solid D1 player.

WSU now has 13 scholarship players and 5 walkons.

Ranked #36 by Juco Junction last year. I look at the shooting % and wonder how he averaged 18.5 though. Still, even if he only plays a few minutes it adds some serious depth to the guard position for a walkon.

There is a discussion of this - along with some charts by RicardoDelRio at this address:

http://shockernet.net/sn/viewtopic.php?t=20002

The chart at the bottom of the thread includes Early, but no walkons. The significant walkons have already been mentioned in my earlier post. Past that, the other 2 walkons are typical walkons. Mitchell seems to be the only significant walkon who is not redshirting or sitting out a trfr year.

Wasn't Armstead the alltime steals leader at Oregon and not Oregon State?

You're right. It's Oregon. I'll fix the original post.

The depth is ridiculous right now. Baker could play, today, for a lot of schools. Mitchell will provide plenty of help, as a walk on.

Outside of Baker, who will redshirt, there is likely to be one, and as many as 3 other redshirts in the freshman class. I expect both Ede and Evan to redshirt, but not Jake.

One thing rarely discussed, this much quality depth helps practices, which makes everyone better.

This is going to be an athletic, old, experienced team. I hope the new guys gel early so the season isn't blown up by a poor non-con season.

I think that Jake may redshirt because of Anacreon who I imagine will be more of a PF than SF. Baker, Wessel and White. I think that Cotton will play based on what he did in Brazil. But he would be another option. I think Ede plays. He's already spent a year at a Prep and is a year older than the other Frosh.
