For those that don't think travel costs should be considered, please remember that we as a Nation, which trickles down to Universities, Alumni and their respective budgets/donations/ticket purchases, are headed into the biggest economic slump the United States has ever seen. Some Economist are predicting an economic setback more dire than the Great Depression in terms of GDP(which is a very real situation given the EU downturn, and mounting debt limits).
Those of you that are pretty proud of how much your school spends, please remember that all changes if the States can't tax more and pass it along.

I don't like the AFA joining for a number of reasons, but most of all is the travel budgets that will be exponentially increased for all sports.

I know there is a big initiative among AD's to get "into another market", I just don't understand the value without major TV contracts to justify upgraded travel so that the student-athletes don't miss any more classroom time. This is why, in my humble opinion, the NCAA should be disbanded, as they have no way to regulate the one thing they say they are supposed to be protecting, but I digress...

Boise State on the market for a similar arrangement?

http://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/index ... n_tar.html

And now, more interestingly, is the MVC in a position of power to poach the WAC or MWC further?

I think the argument earlier was that if the Valley ever has an opportunity to add someone of value THEN travel shouldn't be an issue. AFA is not an opportunity to add someone of value.

Let me say this however, travel is relative obviously. Travel didn't seem to be an issue for the western schools when Evansville was added. Granted ISU blue was already out there but adding another didn't help with travel. Whoever might be added in the future (unless in the center of the footprint) will add travel for somebody.

I just think they are a reasonable fit, and unlike many programs the Valley has added in the past, there would not be an adjustment period required.

I'm sorry but there would be an adjustment and no that shows their spending is at the bottom with Evansville.

Not when their revenues also increase, genius.

Oh really, the MVC will bestow upon them a fortune for joining? Ok so they spend 10 mil instead of 9 mil.

I don't know what school you are a fan of but maybe you should contact your AD and president and suggest joining the summit as they would be happy to have you and then you could get that coveted Oakland home and home going.

BTW squirrel, this makes it look like I'm bashing Oakland. I am not, I'm simply saying they don't warrant an MVC expansion.

Now if the Valley looses somebody sure I can see where they would be considered.

AFA called WAC/MVC about its other sports ; WAC interested; MVC doesn't want to expand. Boise hasn't called either.

Thank God. Hopefully we can put this ridiculousness to bed.

Missouri Valley Conference commissioner Doug Elgin said Sunday that he did speak with Mueh three weeks ago.

"He said they may be looking but that was the extent of it," Elgin said. "Nothing has happened beyond that phone call. I have tremendous respect for the Air Force Academy."

But Elgin said the 10-team Valley has no reason to expand. The Valley has four private and six public institutions and the perfect, 18-game round-robin schedule in basketball.

"We haven't discussed adding an 11th school," Elgin said. "We haven't had any expansion talk in our league. We've had 10 stable members since Tulsa left for the WAC in the mid-'90s

Also...

Elgin said the Valley will activate its expansion committee when it meets in two weeks just to react to the latest shifts in college athletics. But that doesn't mean the Valley would do anything.

Elgin said he hasn't spoken to Boise State.

Well, his full article says Elgin will activate the league's expansion committee, but obviously whether or not they act is a different matter, and probably unlikely.

So I can take it that you're shorting the market and will make a killing on this economic call?

How are the nights in the sleeping bag outside the NYSE treating you?
