At least with the proposed changes, players wouldn't have to resort to stealing sox.

Unless you believe higher education should now be part of the welfare state, men who have to steal socks or can't afford to purchase their own deodorant should be looking for a job, not playing college athletics. They already get their medical expenses covered (unlike other students). So I am fully against the extra monies.

That said, if the MVC doesn't vote to allow the additional stipends then they will cement themselves as the next Summit league. WSU, CU and any another other school who can afford it need to bolt ASAP. If they do vote to allow it, those schools who can't afford it may have to pull back on the number of full scholarships they award. Perhaps Drake cuts one or two scholarships awarded in each sport to afford the extra $2k.

UNI and all other MVC schools could easily afford $2000/player for Men's basketball (and Women's basketball to comply with Title IX). Where this could be a problem is if we were required to do this for all student athletes, including football. That would be a bit more expensive.

It's for all student athletes on full athletic scholarships. Not sure how many of those there are at each MVC school. Baseball, for example, would have few to none.

I guess i missed the part about having to be on full scholarship. So the big boys are looking for recruiting advantages and to comply the NCAA becomes part of the welfare state. Nice.

I can't find where it says it's required for all sports. Even if the MVC votes to implement these changes, the MVFC could vote not to for football, or vote some other amount less than $2000.

I hope that they allow the school to split the sports up since they are technically in different leagues. That could be the Valley's saving grace on this.

I just hope come voting time a majority of the schools see that whether they like it or not they are going to need to vote yes, otherwise the Valley and any league that doesn't will basically drop down a notch.

Let me ask this of the football schools fans... If it comes down to having to choose between not doing it or axing football what do you think the possibility of your particular school axing it would be? (not saying that is whats going to happen or that any school would be in that position, just wondering). Once you axe you can't go back, ask WSU.

2009 is the last one I saw and is the one I got the numbers from

Mar 5, 2009 – NCAA Financial Reports Database | IndyStar.com. Great site that lets you slice and dice revenues and expenses for all division 1 teams.

What a clever way for the NCAA to continue to flush mid- and low-majors down the toilet, under the guise of "compensating student-athletes."

Bottom line, it sucks, but Valley schools are just going to have to suck it up, rob a couple convenience stores or whatever they have to do, to vote to allow this. Cough up the cash or become irrelevant. Only two options.
