I argued back by pointing out that using that logic doesn't mean much or else pretty much every other fanbase in the MVC should take just as much heat because they are doing roughly they same as UNI at attracting a certain % of the Metropolitan Statistical Area to their games.

Honestly, I'm more interested in % of student attendance than I am in % of metro population. You larger schools should be able to get decent attendance numbers on students alone. How big schools like UNI and IlSU, etc have such miserable student attendance is beyond comprehension to me. Creighton's enrollment is less than half of UNI's and I bet the number of CU students that attend games is greater (or at least equal). IlSU's enrollment is about 3X Creighton's yet CU students attend in larger numbers.

By the way, the argument that another town that is a mere 7 minutes away is too far for people to trek is really, really weak. It takes me at least 25 minutes to get from my house to the arena and I'd bet the same is true of most CU season ticketholders.

I totally agree DoubleJay. That is a weak argument. If your team has dedicated fans/alums, they will do anything to get to the game. We have CU season tickets but live almost 3 hours away. We make it to every weekend game, some weekday games, and give our tickets away to friends in Omaha for the other weekday games that we know are not possible to attend so that our seats are filled. It is all about priorities. CU fans and alums live for November-April and arrange their schedule, vacation time, and money around basketball. I am not saying that we are special but just the opposite. ANY fan base can do the same. Excuses are just that...excuses.

I loved the comment made by a UNI fan on that board that the atmosphere was better at Mcleod. I bet the 4000 fans and open seats at a UNI home game really make it a better environment than the 16600 that watched the game in Omaha on Tuesday. Delusional.

DJA- Are you saying UNI has bad student attendance? That used to be the case, but not any longer --- at least when the students are in town.

This is a good point. I think every school struggles with students attendance for about a month during winter recess.

I've never been a fan of hockey arena basketball set-ups, but Creighton's "atmosphere" is good. I think WSU's is probably better, but 16K fans is still 16K fans.

When the McLeod center is full, as it likely will be for many of the upcoming conference games, it can be very loud and the fans and students are right on top of you. I don't know that it's better or worse, it's just a different kind of arrangment.

Maybe it has changed. How many students now attend regularly? How many seats are there in the student section? Do they stay the whole game or just until that little dance is over?

Does anyone keep seperate attendance numbers for students? They have the south end of the arena, and it's usually full. I've never seen large numbers of students leave after the interlude. When was the last time you were at the McLeod for a game?

My point about Waterloo was not that it is too far away. It was that it is a dump of a town, that really has nothing to do with UNI. There is little to no connection with those people and UNI, and it may as well be 4 hours away. Yes, some of that can be blamed on UNI, but I was just making a point about how Waterloo's population does not help UNI much at all.
