I believe Marty and Jankovich are the longest serving coaches in the Valley, both hired in 2007.

EDIT: No, its Jake at UNI. He was hired in 06.

Marshall was also hired in 07. Three coaches hired in 07 still remain without an NCAA bid. I believe the pressure will increase significantly on Jank and Marty if they don't make the NCAAs this year.

More pressure on Jankovich for sure, but I don't think Marty Simmons would be feeling too much heat. He has had the Aces continuing on an upward trend and and it would be a little dicey to think that they can hire a coach who would do better with the resources they have.

Jank might be on a downward trend, but he did win 20-25 games in each of his first three years and will finish with a winning record this year. UE might not finish with a record above .500 this year. He was 9-21 twice, 17-14 once and 15-14 last year. That SHOULD be hot seat if he graduates Colt w/o at least an NIT win.

I'm hearing either Bruce Webber or Rodney Watson from D2 USI, he was a former assistant coach at SIU.

WUFAN, based on your logic, if all NCAA teams get a NCAA bid every 5-6 years, there would be no hot seats. Let's see, 345 teams, 68 bids: doable. Just rotate those bad boys.

All coaches feel the pressure to win and sign the first contract knowing that the axe will fall in 3-8 years, depending on results and improvement.

CEOs, Head Coaches, Principals, and Generals get too much credit when things are going well and too much blame when things go poorly.
There is no difference between basketball and life. Give both your best and ignore the "fans" on the sideline.

press conference highlights

Mario cited 4 factors:
1) Drop in Academics
2) Lack of Player Retention
3) Loss of ticket sales/other revenue
4) General malaise for the program

siu has lost $500,000 over the past couple seasons

told clo between 9:30pm-10:00 pm in the hotel last night

search committee in place hoping for new coach by final four

I hear what you're saying, and I'm glad that UE is being faithful to their coach. I just believe that this industry is one that gives a HC with 3 years to show improvement and 5 years to show that he has what it takes to make the tournament. Historically, in the modern era of the NCAA, that is the norm.

Simmons record, from the outside looking in, does not scream extension. If you remove his first year and give him the benefit of the doubt, he's 56-64. Trending along those same lines, if you remove his first two years (his second was his best) he's 39-50. The past two...30-29. If you only take his three best years (out of five) he's 47-43.

Compare that to Barry Hinson who was 13-16 in his first year and followed that up with none of his next seven under .500 and two 20+ win seasons. In the past 5 years Simmons' record of 65-85 is only barely better than Lowery's record of 67-91(though on a downward trend).

Again, I'm not saying he should be fired (and I honestly hope he succeeds), but if he is at or below .500 next season...this is the business he has chosen.

I agree with you regarding UE. Having a player like Ryan is a good thing of course but he's good enough that it also ramps up the expectation to win and finish high in the MVC standings. He's that good.

But UE needs a good BIG MAN to move up. At least IMO. I guess that's ultimately on the HC too.

I like Marty though. Think he's a good coach and hope he's retained.
