I think a lot of the conspiracy talk on Shockernet is due to pent up frustration that we have not won the tournament in St Louis. We've had enough teams capable of winning the tournament in recent years and only a single appearance in the finals to show for it that you would think we should have won it by now. After a tough loss like against Illinois State, that thinking can get a little crazy.

Marshall was right that strange things happen to the Shockers in St Louis. Does anyone on this board disagree that strange things happen to the Shockers in St Louis? Strange things aren't necessarily the result of a conspiracy. I've only heard about the Valley getting what it wants comment from hearsay, so am not sure what to make of it. I will say that I prefer having a guy who wears his heart on his sleeve more that how stuffy Turgeon was.

Part of me is starting to wonder if when Illinois State got physical and the referees called the game in the typical Valley ugly ball style, the Shocks let everything with St Louis get into their heads.

For opposing team's that don't like Marshall, I don't have a problem with that. He is not a gracious loser, he makes a lot of back-handed comments, he believes that he and Wichita State are the class of the Valley. His personality can be abrasive. I get it.

I'm a Shocker fan. WSU has improved each year he's been here, including a 25 win season, 29 win season, and a 27+ win season. I have a coach that is as passionate about WSU basketball as I am. He recruits great kids. The kids he recruits excell on the court and in the classroom. His kids don't get in to trouble (all of these things can change, but so far...). WSU plays a fun brand of basketball under HCGM and in the past four months we, as Shocker fans, have celebrated 27 times and hung our heads 5. That's more of a coach than I have the right to ask for.

For all of the reason's listed above (both paragraphs), HCGM is a great fit for Wichita State fans!

Excellent! I concur 100% with everything you said and believe the majority of Shocker fans would agree. Coaches aren't perfect. Fans aren't perfect. I'd rather have a 27-5 passionate and abrasive coach versus a 10-22 pushover. Shocker fans have seen the abyss (90's) with 3 consecutive 'soft' kumbaya coaches and believe us, it isn't fun. Like him or not, Marshall fits the WSU fan base perfectly.

If I was a WSU fan I would be happy to have Marshall as my coach. I don't know that I would always agree with the way he conducts himself, but I would be pretty pleased with the results.

That being said, I couldn't be happier with the guy leading the Jays. He and the staff he put together are exactly what Creighton and its fan base deserves.

:+1:

I went and watched the post game interviews last night from Gregg , Greg and Jank. And I know it's a very emotional game and I know 2 of those coach's lost and 1 won. I am very pleased with having Greg as our coach, even after the losses he conducts himself with class. Jank conducted himself with class also.
All 3 of them are very good coach's.

Of that there can be no doubt. In fact, it often seems as if WSU decided to hire one of the more infamous WSU posters from the old VAlleyTalk in selecting its coach. :D

What will be interesting to see is if WSU fans feel the same way when he leaves someday.

This is an opinion I can respect. Admit your coach's shortcomings but be proud of what he does well. Well stated.

Just because we choose to support our coach doesn’t make us bad people. Yes, we have idiot fans like everyone else. We also have some of the most knowledgeable and passionate fans in the country. Our fan base might be one of the oldest in the Valley (damn, we have a lot of gray hairs) with people like myself that remember the great teams of the 50’s and 60’s and playing in the top rated conference in American. Like it or not, we are proud of our history and we are passionate about Wichita State basketball. Yes, many of us have been raised with a ‘chip’ on our shoulder.

Unlike Creighton, Wichita State fans live in a state where we’re considered the 3rd best institution and are often treated like the ‘red headed’ step child by fans and also the state legislature. We’re consistently put down by our Big 12 brethren. We were even put down when we were cut and dried better than either one of them. I can’t tell you how much crap I’ve received from KU and K-State fans the past 50+ years. Right or wrong, over a period of time it starts to wear on a person. Wichita State is considered the villain by many fans in the Missouri Valley Conference. No doubt the probation period of the early 80’s added to our villain reputation. That’s OK, every league needs a villain. We carry the Rodney Dangerfield, “I just can’t get any respect” mantra.

Wichita State was also one of the first institutions to recruit and play black players. That also fueled our ‘bad boy’ reputation in the 50’s, 60’s and early 70’s. There are some unbelievable stories during that era surrounding Shocker basketball. Wichita State started a second half against Louisville (at Louisville) with 5 black players. If I recall correctly, this was a year before Texas Western (now UTEP) started 5 black players and won the national championship. As you can imagine, we were hated by a lot of people for this practice.

I do think it’s time to move on from this topic. Yes, coach Marshall lost some respect this weekend. In the heat of the moment he over reacted. He has a personality that some people will always love to hate. I respect all Valley fans, even you DoubleJayAlum. We get it… we all understand that you don’t like coach Marshall and his antics. We also know you’re not too fond of the City of Wichita or Wichita State in general. You’ve made that perfectly clear. I choose to look at his success (the body of work) and the type of players he brings to my alma mater. I can’t tell you how proud I’ve been of the players he has brought to Wichita. If coach Marshall is a bad person as you like to portray, why does he continue to get quality student athletes to choose WSU?

During the off season, coach Marshall and his family support many local charities and promote and sell the City of Wichita like no other. They are passionate about Wichita and Wichita State. Regardless of his arrogance and sometimes over the top personality, he is a great fit at WSU… I think the perfect fit. These are several reasons why I will be totally “Shocked” if he goes elsewhere anytime soon. I don’t believe he has the personality to ever be a high level BCS coach. He’s a high major non-BCS coach and currently has a great gig. He coaches at a ‘basketball school’ where he doesn’t have to compete for football scraps. He’s at a place where he is the proverbial “big fish in a small pond.”

OK, I’m done… let’s go have a beer!

P.S. When he's long gone, this fan will always appreciate what he did for my school.

I do have a problem his stating there is some type of conspiracy in the MVC to keep WSU down. Are you proud of that? If that had been Cuonzo or Lusk I'd be one of the first to condemn it.

Marshall never said there was a "Conspiracy" in the MVC. I also disagree on some stupid conspiracy theory. It may have sounded like that, but he was just very upset with the officiating at the time. I assume you read our local Wichita Eagle writer Bob Lutz (the Putz). That arrogant bigot put words in our coach's mouth and assumed way too much of what other people were assuming.

I respect the hell out of my Coach and want him to stay around until he retires.

Excellent post! Many of us here share your dilema over being overlooked in their respective states. I would imagine Indy State folks can tell you stories about IU and Purdue. In Iowa, UNI has to deal with Iowa and Iowa State. Mo State has to deal with Missouri and here in Illinois we deal with University of Illinois. We get it and we understand.

I've for some time considered WSU my second favorite team in The Valley but going forward I hope you understand that this will be difficult for me to continue. You have a fine coach who has no personality much like our Donewald back in the 80's. I also hope you understand that in the aftermath of this past weekend many of us who use to like Marshall will no longer be able to do so.

I do agree with you, it's time to move on and this is my last post on this subject. Good luck to you sir in the NCAA.
