MVC School Recruiting Budgets

Postby Ace Dad » March 6th, 2012, 1:42 pm

Recently a current Valley coach (School A), advised a current assistant coach at another school (School B), that he wanted to recruit him as a high school player, in a previous job (School C), but could not because his former school (School C) had a small recruiting budget and he needed more than tape to make a decision. The coach was being positive and complimentary in his comments. So...................

....... do some Valley schools get better recruits because they have a bigger recruiting budget and they can cast a wider net, and put eyeballs on more players?

.................what is your school's annual basketball recruiting budget?

.................do we have a big market and small market situation like the New York teams and everybody else in professional sports?
There is no difference between basketball and life. Give both your best and ignore the "fans" on the sideline.

I'm sure there is a Shocker out there that can post the recruiting budget as I am unaware of it's figure. I do know that HCGM had stipulations put on it surrounding his current contract...a minimum number of recruiting trips using a chartered jet, etc.

Does it make a difference to players? I have no idea. Does it allow for a wider net to be cast? Absolutely!

Probably. The interesting thing is that the cause, in most cases, for the financial discrepancies would be attributable to whether or not the school has a FB program. Outside of perhaps Evansville, I think the healthiest MVC schools, from a financial perspective, would be the schools without football.

There is also the issue of the availability of local talent. Some schools are a lot closer to talent hotbeds than others and can recruit more without as big of a budget. For example, the schools closest to Chicago, St Louis, etc. can spend a great deal of time in those cities recruiting without having to pay air fare/car rental fees or worry about lodging because they can simply drive home in the evening.

I have no idea what Drake's recruiting budget is, but I know that DU has as many coaches on the road recruiting at any given time as is allowed by the NCAA......and they're recruiting all over the country. So, I would say the budget is adequate regardless of what the $ figure is.

limited budget is tough on the poor school coaches, more driving, flying coach, cheap hotels, etc And having private aircraft is a great way to fly! No security lines, no waiting in airports, great food and drink on the plane, flexibility in scheduling, no layovers... only about 20 times more expensive than the cheap route

I really don't know what UNI's recruiting budget is, but I get the impression that Jake gets what he asks for.

Now, being from North Dakota, he's probably thinks the use of a tan Olds Ciera and free drinks and dinners at Ecklund and Swedlin's out by Moose Lake is living in luxery. You betcha.

I think you can glean an answer if you look at the locations of recent signees.

For WSU:

2012: Rockford, IL Dayton, OH Middletown, NY Houston, TX and Charlotte, NC
2011: Scott City, KS Lakeland, IL Eugene, OR Smyrna, GA Chaska, MN Queens, NY Niceville, FL Wichita, KS

2010: Lagos, Nigeria Huntsville, AL North Platte, NE Enid, OK

Gregg recruits anywhere he can find talent, although he's mostly eschewed the west coast. Certainly budget has a lot to do with that. By no means does it promise better recruits, but it certainly gives you more options.

UNI may have a bigger budget than we use, but it's there if we want to use it.

Most of Jakes players come from a 2-8 hour range of CF.

Pflugerville, TX
Cedarburg, WI (4.5 hrs, just north of Milwaukee)
Marion, IA (1 hour)
Sheffield, IA (1 hour)
St. Louis Park, MN (3 hours SW side of Minneaplis)
Alogonquin, IL (4 hours...about an hour west of Chicago)
Charles City, IA (1 hour)
Ashwaubenon, WI (5 hours...."suburb" of Green Bay)
Solon, IA (1 hour)
St. Paul, MN (3 hours)
Cedar Rapis, IA (1 hour)
Kansas City, MO (4 hours)
Glenwood, IL (4.5 hours, south side of Chicago)(recruited from a prep school an hour from CF)
Cedar Falls, IA(5 minutes from campus if you hit the traffic lights wrong)
Sac City, IA (2 hours)
St. Louis, MO (4.5 hours)

Some recent recruits that have been big time players for UNI are 3 more from the same high school in St. Paul as Marc Sonnen (Kwadzo, Erik Crawford, Eric Coleman). Travis Brown is from Richfiled, MN (Minneapolis). Lucas O'Rear is from Nashville, IL (6 hours), Adam Koch was Ashwaubenon, and Bennett (the younger Koch, class of 13) is coming to UNI, Sioux City (4.5 hours)....

Many more from that same time range

FWIW, the Shocker Auction and Golf Tournament raises in the neighborhood of $200K for the basketball program. A lot of that money is earmarked for use by the team for charter flights to all games but I believe some is used for recruiting.
Random MVCFans.com member, circa 2007: "Gregg Marshall is in over his head in this conference."

There was a 2010 ESPN report that stated Marshall had an anuual budget of $80,000 for private jet expenses for recruiting trips. Each trip costs $,3000 - $6,000, so Marshall can make maybe 15 - 20 charter flights a year.

The example Marshall used in the article was that he could recruit a kid in Alabama and be home in time for dinner.

A larger budget means a coach can contact more players and recruit at a distance, but that doesn't mean that coach will get better players. ShockerNet has a very active and informed Recruiting Forum. WSU is in on a surprisingly large number of recruits.

At the other end of the scale, Barry Hinson's recruiting budget seemed to limit him to a two-hour drive. It seemed that almost all his recruits were from the immediate vicinity of Springfield. I thought he did a good job with mostly local recruits.
