I believe its wrong to assume that Coach Knight had not previously held private one on one or team meetings regarding these issues. More likely some progression of actions without results that led up to the very public action.

Not the issue. Of course you are correct and he had one on one sessions with his players. Probably several. The issue is the way he called them out and how he did it and what he said. A coach can only play that card one time every 5-6 years and he better do it at different schools. Public humiliation or public counseling or public insults or public tongue lashings may provide short-term success. Long term, naw. For example, lets say the team plays poorly and wins in the first round, does he berate he seniors again?
There is no difference between basketball and life. Give both your best and ignore the "fans" on the sideline.
