Who is your best recruit coming in?

Postby cpacmel » March 22nd, 2012, 9:18 am

I know there is a recruiting forum, but I would like to know the cliffs notes version of team's best recruit coming in.

You don't have to include stats, unless you want to. I always take PPG in high school with a grain of salt, but that's just me.

For Illinois State, our best recruit coming in is probably Aaron Simpson. He is a 5'11 combo guard out of the north suburbs of Chicago. Simpson is a pretty good outside shooter (39%) from trey his senior year. He can also slash fairly well. The kid is pretty fearless and is pretty confident (aka cocky). Offense is way ahead of his defense. If he was 6'2 / 6'3, he probably could go just about any where.

I would say he is a poor man's version of Allen Iverson / Tarise Bryson.

Impact of 2012-2013: His offense and shooting ability will probably carry him to a spot in the rotation behind Bryant Allen. 3rd SG / 3rd PG.

UNI has nobody coming in next year. Although we do have some redshirts who have considerable expectations.

6'8 Chris Olivier--Post player with considerable size
6'8 Nate Buss--Athletic scorer on the wing
6'2 Matt Bohannon--Shooter
6'1 Jevon Lyle--Anthony James v2.0

Random observation, we have a lot of small PGs in the league the next few years, and all of them seem like they are going to be very good players.

Next year we have Austin Chatman at CU, Deon Mitchell at UNI, Nic Moore at ISU, and Van Fleet at WSU all who are 6' tall or shorter and pretty similar similar players, IMO.

According to ESPN, Evansville's best recruit for next year is 6'4" 210 pound shooting guard Adam Wing from Morehead, KY.

He originally committed to play quarterback at Marshall, but then changed his mind to play basketball at Oklahoma State, but when OSU received too many commitments, they wanted him to attend prep school for a year so he opened his recruitment back up and decided to play basketball at Evansville. In Kentucky's Sweet 16 tournament last year, he had 73 points and 42 rebounds in 4 games helping Rowan County make it to the state championship game. This year he had a much tougher him in the Sweet 16.

This season, he averaged 14.7 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 3.2 assists. He's a contender for Kentucky's Mr. Basketball.

The Aces also have 6'2", 170 lb. point guard DJ Balentine from Kokomo, Indiana and 6'8". 225 PF David Howard from Nashville, TN to round out their recruiting class with one scholarship left open to be most likely filled with a JUCO big man.

I'm going to guess that, although not a "recruit" per se, Geoffrey Groselle, 7-foot red shirt freshman, will be the "new guy" which opponents are going to be least excited to see. :P :P

Drake just got a commitment from a guy who dropped 48 on Simpson earlier this season.

For newcomers, I agree w/the other poster, it's probably Groselle. From what I read, he's already got height and size (about 250 lbs. already). He's pretty good defensively but still raw offensively. Will be GE's main backup next year.

As for new recruits, we only have two. The highest rated is Zierden from Minnesota, a shooting guard (rivals/scout 3 star and 88 on ESPN). One article mentioned him as the best recruit in Minnesota and another mentioned him as one of the top 3 point shooters in the nation. He's only 165 lbs. though so I wouldn't be surprised if he redshirted since we have a ton of shooting guards coming back next year.

Scoreboard... ;)

Good pickup for The Drake. Good size (6'4) under-the-radar kid who scored a lot of points for a poor Lake Forest team.

Good point....Simpson's team still won the game.

Definitely under the radar. He signed to play football at San Diego State, and didn't even play basketball his senior season of baskeball. Prior to that, he was being pretty heavily recruited for basketball.

As to who Drake's best recruit coming in is; it's really hard to say. I'm very high on each of the four, and they all bring something different to the table.

If I had to guess who would have the most impact next season, I'd guess Richard Carter, a juco point guard.

Fred Vanvleet, suppose to be better than Nic Moore.
