My understanding is that the A10 is specifically trying to be a league for strong basketball programs without football programs. Which is very smart.

As good as the Big East is, their instability is mostly due to football teams moving to bigger football conferences. The ACC has raided them repeatedly, because at the end of the day ... football is where the money is, and the Big East makes their money on basketball.

I've also heard that the Big East has an issue with revenue sharing that was exasperating the stability issues.

Without football worries, the A10 is only really at threat of the Big East poaching teams due to their football instability.

While you can argue all day about the #'s CU brings in for bball, it seems that if you are a school and want to make it anywhere, you better have a football team.

While I agree, the key point you're missing here is ... you better have a GOOD football team.

Having an FCS football team does absolutely nothing for you. And that's where you're going to start after beginning a football program. For about ten years, probably. Likely more.

Desperation in the Big East lead them to bringing in one or two weak football programs, but essentially, what you're arguing is for a football opportunity that gives you the option to join a significant conference. To even get into Conference USA you're going to need to have a fairly decent football team. To get into a BCS auto-qualifier, you're going to need years of success at the CUSA/MWC level. How many BCS bowl at-large bids did TCU go to before B12 extended the offer to them? Boise, before the Big East (not to mention that a team in Idaho had to join the Big East!)?

Having BAD football does nothing for you but drain your athletic resources. There aren't many colleges out there with good football programs.

I agree with the above. I do not see WSU competing at a high level in FB for many years if they started a program tomorrow. That is decades of financial drain.

OTOH, Good basketball programs from non-BCS conferences can be profitable and competitive with Duke/Kansas/Kentucky/etc. TODAY.

Creating an elite mid-west basketball only conference is beneficial to any successful basketball program w/o FB as the profitable BB program will not have to prop up the money pit FB program. Donors that gave to FB will also likely still give...just to other sports...like basketball.

I'm not opposed to football. In fact I wish WSU had it, but we don't. It is in our best interest, not to scrap together a second rate FB team, but to maintain and improve upon a first rate BB team. Other schools feel the same way. I want to play with those schools.

I honestly battle with my self about whether I want to see UNI get rid of football. Obviously we are having tough times right now. I think cutting football would really help the situation, and even with the tightening of the budget would expand basketballs budget. I would love to see our basketball team be on the same level as many of the other valley schools in terms of budget and amount we can pay our coach.

Then I think what would I do on Saturdays in the fall. I really enjoy going to watch my Panthers play football, and have had season tickets for quite a while now. I mean I would miss seeing football games in person. I suppose I could go to Iowa or Iowa State and watch games, but I don't think I could support those teams. Again it is tough for me when I think about this.

Any CU insiders know if there is any fire to this or is it just smoke and off season chatter?

I'm no insider, but there is this.

I think its more about Creighton positioning itself as best as possible if other teams from the Valley made moves, or there were strong indications that they would be making moves.

I say great move by the sCUmm and don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

I don't think the door will hit us on the way out because we'll be sprinting out!

Sprinting? Really? Has the MVC been that bad for Creighton?
