Nope, it's not a contest at all. Winning the NIT is far, far better than a one-and-done in the NCAA tournament.

WSU's 2010-11 postseason was better than their 2011-12 postseason. No question.

I wonder in the future when talking about WSU or Marshall's resume, how many sports writers will write "won the NIT in 2011" or "lost in the first round of the 2012 NCAA tournament" ?

Laughable.

Congratulations for the dumbest post in the history of this board. When writing about WSU or Marshall, the first thing people will talk about is how many NCAA tournaments the school/coach went to. NIT appearances, if mentioned at all, will come after NCAA tournament appearances, conference titles and conference tourney titles.

The NIT is NEVER better than the NCAA tourney in today's world. NEVER. When people talk about schools, they ask how many NCAA tournaments have you made and how far did you get. If someone mentions the NIT, the conversation abruptly ends. Nobody asks, "how far did you make it in the NIT?" because ultimately it just means you didn't make the NCAA tournament. The same is true for the CIT, CBI, etc.

NIT, CBI and CIT titles only matter to the schools that won them. Nobody else cares.

You're an idiot and so is has been valleychump.

So Western Kentucky making the First Four is better than WSU's NIT?

See how dumb you are? Do you need more help, because it won't be difficult to point out your stupidity.

What I love though is the expectations put on WSU. Keep it up.

lmao, ok. Quick, name the last 4 NIT Champs?........

Is a CIT championship better than an NCAA bid as well? You can rack up a bunch of wins in that tournament too. Seriously, this is a ridiculous discussion.

The ultimate goal of, literally, every single D1 basketball team is to end their season in the NCAA tournament. It terms of prestige, money, media coverage, notoriety, and historical context the NCAA tournament, whether it is a first round exit or not, trumps any other postseason tournament run hands down. To argue otherwise is just silly.

I wish you could go and ask every single shocker player whether they would rather have won the NIT again this year or lose in the NCAA tournament as they did. I'd bet 100% of them would want to play in the NCAA tournament.

Winning the NIT is nice and gets you added exposure, but in the end, when you look at the stature of a program, the things you look at are National Titles, Final Fours, Elite Eights, Sweet Sixteens and NCAA tournament appearances.....PERIOD.

What expectations? You mean the type of expectations that are perpetuated by people like you? After all, it was you who claimed that no school in this conference can or will achieve relevance as long as GG is still coaching in this league...

Good to see you back, doc. I was worried you were gone for good after the VCU game. ;)

Even Shockernet agrees that one and done in the NCAA tournament is better: http://shockernet.net/forum/showthread. ... IT-CBI-CIT

I don't know if this eans nything, but in the 2 years after a S16, the recruits that came to WSU were

2006-2007
Gal Mekel
Chris Brown
Arbry Butler
J.T. Durley

2007-2008
Oops. coach bailed after the 2006-7 recruiting bust following on the heels of the 2005-6 recruiting bust
Ramon Clemente
Aaron Ellis
Mantas Griskenas
Guy Ntang Alang
Some guy from the east coast who ended up at Quinnipiac

Recruits in the 2 years following an NIT championship - these guys haven't seen much playing time yet, but that's likely to change.

2011-12
Cotton Tekele
Ron Baker (RS) - reports from practice say he's a better shooter than Ragland
Jake White
Evan Wessel
Carl Hall
James Anacreon - VERY late signee that didn't work out
Malcolm Armstead - 3-year player in the PAC-10 at PG with significant minutes and starts. Paying his own way to play at WSU.
Joe Mitchell - JuCo AA took summer classes at Ohio before a trfr. Paying his own way to play at WSU.

2012-13
I'm going with some hype and scouting reports
Cleanthony Early - 6'8" SF. D3 JuCo National PoY as a Fr. Getting consideration for overall JuCo POY this year. Some scouting reports think he's an NBA prospect at SG - needs to improve his % from 3 for that.
Fred VanVleet - 25 pts, 7 boards, 8 assists PG. Mr. Illinois contender finished just behind IlSU's recruit.
Derail Green - 6'7" SF. Those who've seen him and WSU say he's a taller version of Murry or Couisnard - with better shooting range than they had.
Deontae Hawkins - 6'7" SF - Has had academic and discipline issues. If he gets his head on straight, he's considered a significant contributor as a Fr
Henry Uwadiae - 6'10" - 7' Nigerian playing his HS ball at a number of prep schools. Sketchy info on this guy. Considered raw on offense, but solid on boards, blocks, and D. A more polished version of Orukpe. No one will be surprised if he doesn't show or doesn't get NCAA clearance due to his school-hopping.

Recruiting after an NIT championship looks better than recruiting after a S16. SIU had one really great class after a S16, but that didn't work out well. BU did nothing on the recruiting front after their S16.

I don't know if an NCAA appearance is better or worse than winning the NIT, but recruiting at WSU looks like it went through the roof after winning the NIT, which didn't happen even after a S16 appearance.

Maybe an NCAA appearance is better than an NIT championship, but WSU got a lot more of its priority recruits this year than any year since they signed Cliff Levingston and Antoine Carr.
