Actually since WSU signed Aubrey Sherrod and Greg Dreiling, two McD All-Americans. Sherrod was co-MVP of the McD All Star Game, held at Henry Levitt Arena.

The class with Joe Griffin was very good too.

Nope, it's not a contest at all. Winning the NIT is far, far better than a one-and-done in the NCAA tournament.

WSU's 2010-11 postseason was better than their 2011-12 postseason. No question.

I wonder in the future when talking about WSU or Marshall's resume, how many sports writers will write "won the NIT in 2011" or "lost in the first round of the 2012 NCAA tournament" ?

Marshall's legacy will be that he is "in over his head in this conference".

Recruits in the 2 years following an NIT championship - these guys haven't seen much playing time yet, but that's likely to change.

2011-12
Cotton Tekele
Ron Baker (RS) - reports from practice say he's a better shooter than Ragland
Jake White
Evan Wessel
Carl Hall
James Anacreon - VERY late signee that didn't work out
Malcolm Armstead - 3-year player in the PAC-10 at PG with significant minutes and starts. Paying his own way to play at WSU.
Joe Mitchell - JuCo AA took summer classes at Ohio before a trfr. Paying his own way to play at WSU.

2012-13
I'm going with some hype and scouting reports
Cleanthony Early - 6'8" SF. D3 JuCo National PoY as a Fr. Getting consideration for overall JuCo POY this year. Some scouting reports think he's an NBA prospect at SG - needs to improve his % from 3 for that.
Fred VanVleet - 25 pts, 7 boards, 8 assists PG. Mr. Illinois contender finished just behind IlSU's recruit.
Derail Green - 6'7" SF. Those who've seen him and WSU say he's a taller version of Murry or Couisnard - with better shooting range than they had.
Deontae Hawkins - 6'7" SF - Has had academic and discipline issues. If he gets his head on straight, he's considered a significant contributor as a Fr
Henry Uwadiae - 6'10" - 7' Nigerian playing his HS ball at a number of prep schools. Sketchy info on this guy. Considered raw on offense, but solid on boards, blocks, and D. A more polished version of Orukpe. No one will be surprised if he doesn't show or doesn't get NCAA clearance due to his school-hopping.

Recruiting after an NIT championship looks better than recruiting after a S16. SIU had one really great class after a S16, but that didn't work out well. BU did nothing on the recruiting front after their S16.

I don't know if an NCAA appearance is better or worse than winning the NIT, but recruiting at WSU looks like it went through the roof after winning the NIT, which didn't happen even after a S16 appearance.

Maybe an NCAA appearance is better than an NIT championship, but WSU got a lot more of its priority recruits this year than any year since they signed Cliff Levingston and Antoine Carr.

WSU only got better recruits after the NIT because a different guy is in charge compared to the Sweet 16. If you want to use recruiting results in this argument you can say 2nd round CBI is better than the Sweet 16.

Absolutely pointless evaluation that leaves out tons of variables and looks to be on the reasoning level of Coldblooded. Wow.

I'm pretty sure I'm making more money these days now that Jim Risch is a senator from Idaho than I did before he was elected. Thank you Jim for making my life better! Its all due to you!

I don't think that even Marshal's biggest critics say anything negative about his recruiting.

I think you could give Aargh a bit of a break here. He states right at the beginning that he doesn't know if it means anything or not.

Which, of course, is why he just won the regular season Valley championship.

Jet915 wrote:Winning the NIT is nice and gets you added exposure, but in the end, when you look at the stature of a program, the things you look at are National Titles, Final Fours, Elite Eights, Sweet Sixteens and NCAA tournament appearances.....PERIOD.

Absolutely a NT, Final Four, Elite Eight, and Sweet 16 are better. I'll even give you that the round of 32 in the NCAA tournament could arguably be better than winning the NIT. I would disagree, but you can argue it.

valleychamp wrote:lmao, ok. Quick, name the last 4 NIT Champs?........

Quick, name every team that lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament in the last four years.

Guarantee you more people can name the last 4 NIT champs. Guarantee you more people can name the last four NIT champs than can name every team that lost in the first round THIS year.

DoubleJayAlum wrote:Congratulations for the dumbest post in the history of this board. When writing about WSU or Marshall, the first thing people will talk about is how many NCAA tournaments the school/coach went to. NIT appearances, if mentioned at all, will come after NCAA tournament appearances, conference titles and conference tourney titles.

Ignoring your blatantly pathetic insult for daring to disagree with you, almost every single article going into the NCAA tournament about WSU included the fact that they won the NIT the previous year.

Not that WSU went to the Sweet 16 last in 2006. Not that Marshall lead Winthrop to seven NCAA tournament appearances in nine years. Not that WSU was in the argument for an at-large bid for the previous two years. The one thing that was mentioned again and again was: they won the NIT.

Want examples? Just run down ESPN's news filter for WSU.

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketb ... e-shockers "Last year, the Shockers won the NIT."
http://insider.espn.go.com/mens-college ... e-shockers "The 2011 NIT champs are a junior- and senior-laden team ..."
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=320622724 "Toure' Murry has embraced his newfound supporting role, a year after carrying Wichita State to the NIT title."
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=320632724 "Murry had 15 points for Wichita State, which won the NIT last season."

I'm sure Bluejays fans will disagree. After all, your entire program is built on losing in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Considering you do the same thing in the NIT, there's no question what's important to you. I have no doubt that fans of teams that, when sad about not making the NCAA tournament, turn around and crap themselves in the NIT, will always argue that "it doesn't matter anyway."

Amazing how much outright hostility I can generate for a harmless opinion. Considering I've never called anyone on here names, I can't imagine why this forum gets such a bad rap for being hostile to WSU fans.

Absolutely, how dare I express an opinion. Please, call me an idiot again. Let's have another dozen UNI and Creighton fans blast me for being an idiot because I have had the absolute gall to respectfully make an argument you don't agree with while citing facts.

Thanks for posting that link to the Shockernet thread, DoubleJayAlum. It's nice to see the difference between these two forums on how the exact same issue was responded to.

I'm done here. I assumed the reaction from people on Shockernet towards this forum was just crap from a couple of people that came on here acting like fanboys and got shot down for it, and were bitter. I assumed participating in discussions respectfully wouldn't get the same reaction. I was wrong, and I don't feel like being involved in a pile-on. Enjoy.

Honestly, the only reason why WSU NIT win was talked about this year was because they were returning a good amount of talent back this year and were expected to be good (so of course people are gonna say, "WSU won the NIT last year"). If WSU lost all their starters from their NIT team, they wouldn't have been mentioned at all.

I could tell you whether our not a team played in this years tournament, or last years, with an accuracy of 98% before I could tell you who won the NIT THIS year...

This became a "humor " thread around page 7. I'm just trying to do my part to keep up the stupidity.
