Strange deal here. So Uthoff never appealed?

According to two sources with knowledge of the situation, Uthoff never appealed any of the schools that UW had denied on the initial list. Uthoff had two business days to do so, and that window has closed.

Right, but he's not simply just "paying for his kid's education". He's doing it to get another basketball scholarship.

The fact of the matter is, it would be 100% illegal if he weren't his son. He is literally "buying" another scholarship for his basketball team.

It doesn't violate a single rule. Not one. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean that there is something wrong with it. In fact, your response just sounds like jealous rantings.

Didn't UNI just make some kid pay his own way in order to open up another scholarship?

I don't know what you are studying at UNI, but I'd suggest taking a class or two in thinking outside of the box. Finding creative solutions to problems is something that most businesses look for, not shun.

Would it be legal if UNI hired Uthoff's father to fill the open assistant coach position at UNI and paid him a base salary, plus enough to cover Jarrod's tuition?

There are rules that prevent schools from hiring family members in order to land recruits. This is no different. As it is now, Mac is basically agreeing to pay for Uthoff's scholarship out of his pocket, it's just semantics as to who is getting the actual scholarship.

As for UNI, the player who gave up his scholarship went to Jake and offered it up to land the player, Jake did not make anyone pay their own way, it was voluntary. It is still possible that could happen again to land Uthoff, I have heard rumblings it is possible.

I really think UNI fans have lost it.

UNI told Uthoff that it didn't have any scholarships for him. Jake decided to pop for Uthoff's AAU teammate, Washpun instead.

If Creighton gets Uthoff, which is seemingly a big if right now, it isn't at UNI's expense. UNI could go after Uthoff right now if they wanted. However, they have decided not to do so.

No, it isn't against the rules to hire Uthoff's father as an assistant coach. You can't hire his dad to meaningless positions any longer, but you can hire them to be one of your limited number of allowed assistants.

The distinction you are trying to make with the UNI kid who gave up his scholarship fails as well. Basically, a rich kid had his parents pay the bill to open up the scholarship for someone else. Isn't that favoring rich kids over poor inner city kids that can't afford to pay tuition? Funny how that fairness argument isn't a problem for you. Also, it wasn't the other player that volunteered; it was the other player's PARENTS.

Substitute Doug for the UNI rich kid and Creighton for UNI and you have the EXACT SAME SITUATION.

No matter which hat he's wearing, McDermott can count to 13 which is how many scholarships UNI has filled.

No one has said UNI is not going after him or that Uthoff has no interest in UNI without a scholly this year either (he could still walk-on). It is probably more likely that he walks on at ISU (where his uncle played) or maybe even Iowa, but UNI is not out of the question either.

The bigger problem with the whole walk-on vs scholarship issue is the murk area that could be opened up. Yes, Mac has every right to do it as the rules currently stand. So did the player/parents at UNI who gave up a scholarship. There are rules that prevent hiring of family members to recruits who are on scholarship, but the whole thought that you could get players to go non-scholarship while giving family members benefits is much harder to police. Big boosters could get involved and "hire" family members for a base salary and then enough more to cover tuition/scholarship costs in order to get a player to "walk-on". Of course, the player's expenses are being covered entirely by a wealthy booster in the form of the paycheck given to the family member, but how does the NCAA police that? Kind of like what was brought up in The Blind Side with a wealthy booster family taking in a gifted athlete and him then going to their alma mater. Maybe it is just out of kindness and there is no pressure put there, maybe it is not.

Same thing for academic scholarships. Uthoff is reportedly a pretty good student. Maybe he gets an academic scholarship? I believe there are rules against giving an academic scholarship to a player who has been recruited, but was he recruited by Mac out of high school at CU-I know UNI was on his list of last few teams, don't remember CU being on it. I would assume that Mac did look at him as his style is very similar to players that Jake and Mac use.

I don't think anyone can deny a coach paying the way for his son is a little bit of a fuzzy area. Obviously, right now, it is fully acceptable under NCAA rules. Personally, I think if a coach wants to pay for his son's education, he should have to do it for all four years and not be able to put the player on scholarship and then remove the scholarship and pay his son's way to open a scholarship for a specific player.

The whole McDermott situation is a little strange to me. Was there ever a reason given for Greg not giving Doug a scholarship at Iowa State? If Greg does decide to pay Doug's way to Creighton, it gets even more strange. If he didn't want to give Doug a scholarship at Iowa State, why didn't he pay his way?
