He wasn't even at Iowa St when Doug started college so the whole discussion is moot.

Actually there was at least one story where Jake was quoted as saying that he has no scholarship to give Uthoff. I don't have the link handy as there are dozens of articles about Uthoff right now, but I did see it somewhere.

Khan4Cats wrote:The bigger problem with the whole walk-on vs scholarship issue is the murk area that could be opened up. Yes, Mac has every right to do it as the rules currently stand. So did the player/parents at UNI who gave up a scholarship. There are rules that prevent hiring of family members to recruits who are on scholarship, but the whole thought that you could get players to go non-scholarship while giving family members benefits is much harder to police. Big boosters could get involved and "hire" family members for a base salary and then enough more to cover tuition/scholarship costs in order to get a player to "walk-on". Of course, the player's expenses are being covered entirely by a wealthy booster in the form of the paycheck given to the family member, but how does the NCAA police that? Kind of like what was brought up in The Blind Side with a wealthy booster family taking in a gifted athlete and him then going to their alma mater. Maybe it is just out of kindness and there is no pressure put there, maybe it is not.

Honestly, I don't see how the whole Blind Side situation is at all similar to what you are suggesting. In the Blind Side, the family took care of him in high school, but Uher earned a college scholarship. He wasn't going to walk on at Ole Miss or anywhere else.

The silly thing about this is that it is hardly a new development. Pat Knight played for Bobby Knight. I believe the best player for Detroit is the coach's son. The Drew kids played for their dad, Homer, at Valpo. The Suttons played for their father. Just because UNI fans didn't meltdown in the past over the issue doesn't mean that it is brand new.

So? In those situations did they a) take away a scholarship from their kid who previously had been under scholarship, in order to grab another player? or b) was that kid a freaking all-american? And that's not even mentioning the facts of how McD even got Doug to Creighton in the first place.

Irrelevant.

You are letting your bitterness get in the way of common sense. The McDermott situation is not the first time in the history of college sports that a head coach has the option of paying tuition for their son (or daughter) in order to give a scholarship to someone else.

Yes, but what is the relevance? Maybe he did give his son a chance to walk on, but his son wasn't interested in walking on at ISU?

Irreleveant? Its completely relevent, as it totally changes the dynamic of the situation. Creighton would be doing it after the fact. Doug had already been on scholarship for two seasons, and they are taking it away just to pull in a high profile transfer. Its the fact that he would be doing this after the fact that I have a problem with. If he had chosen to do it from the beginning, fine. If he had done it to give another player already on the roster a scholarship, fine. But in this situation, he is literally buying another (good) player. To put it any other way is just semantic spin.

Its you that is letting your bias get in the way of the reality of what he is doing. Is it technically "illegal", no. But it is, in my opinion, most certainly "toeing the ethical line".

There is a big difference between telling someone we don't have a scholarship and not going after him. You like to try and read little things that aren't there. Is UNI interested in him? Yes. Do we currently have a scholarship? No. Might he be willing to pay his own way for a year? That is what I said and noted that if he does pay his own way, he might choose ISU first.

All of those players you listed were on scholarship for all four years of their careers (except for the kid at Detroit who I think still has 2 years left). Not an issue at all that they are on scholarship. None of them gamed the system to grab a bonus player, either.

havoc wrote:I don't think anyone can deny a coach paying the way for his son is a little bit of a fuzzy area. Obviously, right now, it is fully acceptable under NCAA rules. Personally, I think if a coach wants to pay for his son's education, he should have to do it for all four years and not be able to put the player on scholarship and then remove the scholarship and pay his son's way to open a scholarship for a specific player.

The whole McDermott situation is a little strange to me. Was there ever a reason given for Greg not giving Doug a scholarship at Iowa State? If Greg does decide to pay Doug's way to Creighton, it gets even more strange. If he didn't want to give Doug a scholarship at Iowa State, why didn't he pay his way?

He didn't want to give his son a scholarship at ISU because he didn't think he had "Big XII talent".

Ignore the fact that he was under serious heat at Iowa State and probably would have been canned before Doug was done with college.

He managed to stash Doug at UNI with his 'friend' in order to be able to take him wherever he went after the ax would fall at Iowa State. As it happened, Altman bailed on CU before Doug was enrolled at UNI and he was able to use Doug as a bonus feature to land the Creighton job.

Dude, if you seriously think that the fact that he had a son helped McDermott get the Creighton job, you've completely lost it. Doug has turned into a monster player, but he wasn't exactly a five star McDonalds all American coming out of Ames HS. Greg was going to redshirt Doug his freshman year until Wragge got hurt!!!!
