Evansville lands 2013 Forward

Postby havoc » May 9th, 2012, 11:50 am

Word on Twitter is that Blake Simmons, a 6'5", 185lb forward from Newburgh, IN gave a verbal to UE. He averaged 19.6 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists and shot 41% from 3 last year.

His dad is a college coach.

His dad will be his next coach...Marty Simmons.

Happy to have him finally commit!

Glad to see it finally happen but not really a surprise for me :)

Great player btw! Will be interesting to watch him play for UE in the coming years.

Very happy to hear him finally commit.

I heard some rumors last winter that he was also strongly considering an Ivy League school.
Wishing I was back home again.

Should just let him walk on and use a scholarship to get 14 scholarship-level players on the roster.

Works for me if UE pays Simmons enough to make it work for him.

I swear there are so many whiney beatches on this site.

Unwad your panties a bit. It's a perfectly legal, moral, and ethical practice- so I'm told. I'm just suggesting a proposition that allows Marty an opportunity to avoid heat if the kid doesn't work out or needs a redshirt year before being any good. Wouldn't want people giving him a hard time for showing favoritism to someone who isn't good enough to be a high-level D-I athlete.

Or is it that CU was looking to fill a vacancy on their staff with another former Aces coach? If so, it would be even better for them if he weren't on scholarship. As for the cost, it could pretty much be written into the contract as a pass-through, just give Marty a raise equal to the cost of tuition, room and board.

I don't think he can. That would be a special benefit provided by the university. If that were the case, McDecommitt would already be on a free ride at Creighton. There is nothing illegal, immoral or unethical about a coach paying for his son to attend college, but if a player is receiving a benefit, it counts. It is a little more technical than this, but in a nutshell, players can be a walk on and receive academic scholarships, so far as the scholarship is earned for academics and the scholarship is readily available to every student based on ability and achievement, i.e. a regent's scholarship. When tuition is paid as a benefit, it counts. Marty can pay the freight and get 14 D-1 caliber players, or he can allow his son grant and aid and count it towards the scholarship limit.
There are three rules that I live by, never get less than 12 hours sleep, never gamble with a guy who has the same first name as a city and never get involved with a chick with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Stick to that and everything else is gravy!
