I don't think there is any way Boise State can go back to the Mountain West now.They'll find some way to keep the WAC alive and put their Olympic sports there or they will in conjunction with the Big East exert enough pressure on the Big West to allow them in.

The bottom line is that in June of 2010 Boise left the WAC because it was a crappy football league. Now the current Mountain West is like the old WAC with a few MWC hold overs who could not get invited to the big table. At least the Big Least has Louisville, Rutgers, Cincy, and now SMU, UCF, and Houston. It is not great but still better than the Mountain West.

Boise State is just posturing in my opinion. They will be in the Big East in 2013.

It warrants mentioning that once TCU, Boise St, and all the good smaller schools started to pop up in AQ conferences, they moved to a system where AQ doesn't matter. Clever fellows, those BCS conferences.

I'm really not sure on Boise St. The WAC is going to die, I bet. Every school in there is actively looking for new conferences. I'm not sure Boise St can keep it from tearing apart.

The Big West, according to rumors, have rejected Boise St's application to join the conference. Big Sky has said they'd open arms for Idaho, but not for Boise St yet, and besides, the Big Sky is already almost busting at the seams on membership. WCC has rejected Boise. They're just about down to the Summit or bust, and even that isn't a sure thing that the Summit would want to do it. There's a reasonable chance that in order to play football in the Big East, they'd have to go independent in the other sports.

Just shows how IMPORTANT football is and how much money is involved. Boise State is pretty much sacrificing all it's other sports for football. Kinda sad...

Sounds like the Big West will have a vote on whether to add Boise's non football sports.

This Boise example just proves the power of college pigskin. That is always going to be the giant hegemon of collegiate athletics. It comes close to rivaling the NFL. College basketball is prominent in the national consciousness for the month of March, to a lesser extent the CWS has 7-10 days in June, and the College Cup for maybe a weekend in December. The last two are mostly niche sports anyhow. But college football is at the forefront all year round. Just interesting to think about and I think it proves why schools like UTSA, Charlotte, and Old Dominion are so eager to get their football programs going. It also explains the lure of Conference USA to schools like Missouri State.

That being said I hope Boise is left out in the cold by the WAC, Big West, WCC, Summit, Big Sky, NL Cental, and even NAFTA. Glorified junior college with ugly blue turf is all they are anyhow. For goodness sake's their basketball arena is named after Taco Bell. Seriously? I will relish their fall from football relevence in the future every bit as much as the bandwagon BSU Bronco fans have enjoyed jumping aboard the Good Ship Chris Petersen.

Could one say the same thing about schools that have FCS football - they are sacrificing funds that could be spent on their athletic programs to the money drain that is FCS football?

Honestly, none of BSU's other athletic programs are all that good anyway, so in this instance I don't think it matters much. BSU is known throughout the country due to their FB team. As cool of a story as Gonzaga's rise in college hoops is, the rise of BSU's football team in the big, big money world of college football is much more amazing.

I'd be interested to know what the revenue discrepancy is between a top of the mark basketball program (like Kansas, Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky) and similar high stature programs in BCS football. Comparing football to basketball I mean. Is it a huge difference? Just curious as I'm really not that big of a college football fan.

Huge might be an understatement.

For the 2009-2010 school year, Texas had the most profitable football team with revenues of $68,830,484. On the other hand, Louisville had the most profitable basketball team with revenues of $16,800,234.
