Drake wins 101-80, playing without 2 key players

Freshman Joey King led the way with 22.

Simons had 13 points, 11 rebounds.

Micah Mason, Seth Van Deest and Gary Ricks also in double figures...Daddy Ugbede with 9.

Richard Carter with 10 assists, 0 turnovers.

Chris Hines and Jeremy Jeffers didn't play due to injuries. Jordan Clarke and Karl Madison played very little.

This team passes the ball very well. DU 15-24 from 3-point range, but only 14-26 from the line. Also gave up 16 3-pointers.

12 different players scored for DU.

MSU looked much better on the defensive end last night. Gavin and Marcus Marshall were impressive again offensively. Kirk and PICKINS played well too.

Bears beat McKendree 82-54. Better overall performance than 1st game, especially defensively in the 1st half. As noted freshman Gavin Thurman and Marcus Marshall continue to shine of the bench. Thurman is more advanced than Weems was early in their careers; his offensive game is much more versatile. He went for 18pts and 6 rbs in 20 minutes. Marcus is playing backup at both guard spots and is very polished offensively and plays hard defensively with decent size 6'2-6'3. He had 15pts,4 assists,5rbs. Other notables were Keith Pickens with 12pts and 8 rbs in his debut, and Kirk went for 13 pts, 6rbs. We will continue to play 10 for a while and our 6 freshman are all in the rotation. Thurman and Marshall are the two best prospects I've seen for the Bears at their positions in a long time at this stage of their development. It'll be a growing year with I'm sure alot of tough moments with 6 frosh, a soph and only one senior, but the future looks awfully bright down the road.

Glad to see the freshman playing well, but even more notable is that the Bears aren't building on their rebounding and defensive woes that plagued them in their first exhibition.

I know your quote was about the MSU game, but just wanted to mention that Drake's freshmen played a total of 75 minutes in DU's exhibition game last night.....and score 52 points. If only they were as far along defensively as they are on offense.

I was at the game and that wasn't my impression at all?? The Bears played with great defensive intensity the 1st half and quickly got out to a 20 point lead. They let up somewhat in the 2nd half but that's hard for any team to maintain that level of intensity with a 20 point lead. Haven't seen a box score to see the totals but it certainly didn't appear we had any rebounding problems? They grabbed a few offensive rebounds in the 2nd half but again at that point we had a huge lead.

My main concern is that of our current starting 5 - our 2 redshirt freshmen and Nathan Scheer haven't shown that much offensively in these 2 exhibitions. Drew doesn't even look for the ball on offense. And while Dorrian looks like a very competent handler he just doesn't look for his shot much. Scheer doesn't look confident at that end either. They are very young (the redshirts not Scheer) though and hopefully this changes. If it continues though I don't know how you could keep Gavin, Pick, and M Marshall out of the starting lineup.

glm - I read Wufan's comment to mean that MSU's defense and rebounding improved in the second exhibition.

Ditto, I think you misunderstood Wufan, glm. Secondly, don't worry about who's starting now, all 3 [Scheer/Williams/ Wilson] will be in our top 8 rotation and bring something to the mix. Scheer is starting because Pick had a diciplinary game penalty and because they want to watch his minutes early. Wilson and Williams are just alittle more familiar with the defensive rotations than Gavin and Marcus, having been in the system a year. Those 8 will play the bulk of minutes , with BM getting some minutes every game, and Simpson getting looks and perhaps an expanded role as the season progresses, especially if Scheer has season long shooting woes. But right now Simpson has alot of problems defensively and Scheer is one of our most dependable defenders. All 10 will play, even Aromana some, but that 1st 8 will see the floor 20 minutes or so each regardless who starts.
