Make Your Case

Postby UTSA_J » December 6th, 2012, 3:17 pm

Hey guys. UTSA_J here. I'm a very frustrated UTSA student. Love my 'Runners, but damn if they don't suck at basketball, and I love basketball. So this year, I draw the line. Instead of spending another year watching the 'Runners suck, I want to root for someone good. Not a BCS conference either. Sick to death of them, and if it were going to be a BCS school, it'd be Texas, no contest. But I like the whole mid-major bit, so I figured, where could I go to find some cool mid-major schools?

Not gonna lie, I like the Valley. Y'all know basketball. So, what I want to know is, which Valley school should I root for? Being from Texas, I have no dog in this fight automatically, so I want to know which dog I should back.

Which Valley team should I root for?

How about rooting for the MVC school with the most Texans?

The Aces have not been to a NCAA tournament longer than the other 9 programs in the Valley.

UE has one of the smallest student populations in D1 basketball.

Aces graduate from college, mostly.

Any idiot can root for a perennial winner.

How about the Valley school that handed UT an NBA-caliber player in the late 90's?

WSU's S16 team (2006) had 3 Texans on it. Kyle Wilson, matt Braeuer, and P.J. Couisnard. WSU's NIT championship team (2011) had 3 Texans on it: David Kyles (Dallas), Toure Murry (Houston), and J.T. Durley (Pittsburg). The SG on Durley's HS team was the all-Big12 WR for Baylor who graduated last year and is tearing up the NFL this year.

Now we've got a 6'7" SF from Houston, who's taking a red shirt year because WSU is really deep and Derail Green could use a bit of bulk before tearing up D1 basketball.

WSU is now the D1 school with the longest streak of having a player from Houston on the roster - 13 years. WSU has had a player from Houston for more consecutive years than Houston.

WSU was picked 4th in the league in pre-season polls, and now has an RPI of 8, with road wins over VCU and Air Force. We've also got neutral court wins over DePaul and Iowa. If you like to follow a winner that's an over-achiever, pick the Shockers. Anyway, we've got a totally unique nickname - Shockers.

You will also find that everyone on this board hates Wichita State. If you want to find a winner, find the most hated team on a conference message board. That's generally a winner. No one hates on a loser.

A winner huh? How many conference titles the last 20 years? Tourney championships?
