I think Notre Dame would at least listen.

The Catholic 7 will decide which way all of this goes down. Interesting note: if they poach Xavier, Dayton, St Louis, and Butler, the A-10's western post becomes Duquesne. It's possible the A-10 would leave the MVC alone in that scenario.

Maybe, but I would doubt for very long. What teams left in the Big East are attractive to Notre Dame? Georgetown and Marquette? After that, it is really pretty slim pickings. It is all about football for Notre Dame. The ACC is the only logically move for ND down the road when football conference affiliation in required. In the meantime, they get all the benefits of being in the ACC for football without actually being in it and get what is probably the premier conference at this second in just about every other sport of park the rest of their programs.

Actually, I think ND's ego is so big that they would rather be in the conference that is the least threatening to their football independence.

TAS and I once thought between the 2 of us we'd have all the answers. But even we got nothin' on this.

Here are the main scenarios I see:

1) New Hoops only entity stays small and prestigious (add ND) over.
2) Same as above but goes to 10 or 12. Poach A10 and possibly CU.
3) (I'd say this isn't terribly likely) A trans-national hoops league that raids A10, CAA, MVC and WCC.

While I would not like to see Bradley leave the Valley or the Valley poached, I do think a hybrid Horizon-2nd tier A10 might be attractive for a non-football school like us.

I'm a graduate student at ND. While that may have been true in the past, I think most in the athletic department realize remaining independent in football may no longer be an option in the future once a playoff system is set. Granted, making the national championship game this year as an independent this year does give them a bit more leverage to remain independent. We will see.

Had ND not made a BCS game this year, their bowl game choices were pretty limited since they used up their Big East tie-ins. Had they not made a BCS bowl this year, ND would be playing Duke in the Belk Bowl this year. If they would move to this new Big East conference, it would 100% be BCS or bust. I don't think that is a situation they want to get themselves in.

If that happens, I don't think it is a matter of the A10 leaving the MVC alone, but rather that the A10 would not have any appeal to anybody in the MVC.

Well now the ACC is getting involved so all bets are off on the 7 sticking together once they split.

Dayton could be a surprise odd man out here. Would you take a Creighton-Dayton swap?

Shhhhh hide the link. It's hilarious we had Syracuse as our consensus team in the Big 10, completely ignored Maryland, dismissed Rutgers and Nebraska without thought :buddies:

We both have nothing really in the end here. Because whatever the Catholic 7 wants, they'll get. It's up to them. No constraints, unlike all the other realignment moves that we've seen.
