The best thing they could do is hitch their wagon to Creighton, if possible. I don't thunk this will be an eight or ten team league, that is a horrible way to earn NCAA berths. 14-16 teams allows for a round robin conference slate where you don't play every team every year. That garners a higher RPI, a better chance if teams having gaudy w-l records and more teams in the dance. An eight or team team league is a 1.5 bid league. A 14 team league is five or possibly six.

First of all the MVC doesn't want to replace a very small private school with little resources with another very small private school with little resources that plays in a high school gym. NOBODY and I mean NOBODY wants Valpo.

If the Valley runs out and starts adding teams like it's going out of style we are all screwed. Sit tight at 8, take your time, do your homework and then see if somebody is worth inviting.
Agree fully, if the MVC needs a new member, my guess if the first call made is to Murray State.

I like Murray State a lot but the question is will they add value. Will the addition of Murray State mean an extra bid a majority of the time or will it mean just another mouth to feed? If you add it can't just be a good team they have to be a team that can earn the at large during the non con. Sure they have done that recently but can they do it without an All-American guard? I know they have a lot of NCAA appearances but how many of those over the years where due to winning the crappy conference as opposed to having an at large resume?

Because again....unless the team is a proven at large team adding them is just adding another mouth to feed.

I've heard it phrased just a little differently. Something about mauve and something about smell.

I asked this on twitter, but will post it here too: *If* Creighton were to leave the MVC, does anyone know when their actual departure would occur? Seems like this could be in court a while.

I'm not sure what the MVC bylaws say, but I have a feeling Elgin is the type of guy who would be flexible, for better or worse, about membership changes. I have a feeling whatever financial commitments the MVC would demand from Creighton would be bought out by the Catholics.

Actually, to clarify, my thought was that the Big East could get tied up in court for a really long time haggling over NCAA units, the league name, and the exit fees that the current members should be receiving from Syrcause, Pitt, etc for leaving the league previously.

Why would litigation keep a new league from starting up?

Any litigation would be used to compute financial damages or to determine the rights to the "Big East" name. It shouldn't be able to keep teams from leaving, especially when the conference bylaws specifically allow the basketball schools to leave without paying an exit fee.

Allegedly (and I emphasize the allegedly), there's some clauses in the Big East contracts that deal with distributions of assets of all the non-footballs split. Basically, there's a pre-nup in place and has been in place from the start.

I say July 2014 is when everything goes down. Remember, the Big East still has a football BCS bid in 2013. I think everyone's going to try and hold their nose through next season and sync up the changes with the new football changes.
