History is important and helps shape a schools reputation even if it's old.

As I was saying, trolls from other schools constantly attempting to tear down other programs in the conference.

Kyle wrote:Good press is quickly forgotten, but bad press sticks around a loooooooong time. Much like a business, one bad review will wipe out 10 good reviews.

Nobody in the sports world cares about UNI's D2 days. It wasn't bad news or good news, it was no news. I never once heard it brought up during our 5 tournament appearances the last 10 years. Not one story was written about it during our S16 run. Not one journalist or blogger mentioned the phrase D2 in the hundreds of articles I read about UNI's tournament appearances and S16 appearance. You see, nobody cares about history unless it has juicy details, be it negative or positive.

Just look at UNLV. Everyone will always remember them as the school who got caught cheating. When the brackets were announced a few years ago and UNI was matchup up with UNLV, I spoke to a few colleagues and casual sports fans about their thoughts on the matchup. They all made similar comments about the matchup, "Didn't they get caught cheating?" or "Are they the school who got in trouble?" These were not UNI fans or UNLV fans, they were just casual sports fans who don't really pay attention to college basketball until the tournament. They didn't know or care what UNI did 20-30 years ago because it wasn't news worthy. They also didn't make note of UNLV's recent accomplishments because it wasn't a juicy story like cheating is.

This isn't a slight at WSU, it's just a one reason they carry a less than squeaky clean reputation. Personally, I wish UNI toed the line a little more. I envy WSU's willingness to work in the grey area and do whatever it takes to bring high quality basketball players into the program. Whether they continue to cross the line or not, I don't know. I do know WSU treats college basketball like a big business while UNI tries to reinforce the "student" part of student-athlete. We all know to compete with the big boys, this is almost impossible (save rare exceptions like Duke/Stanford/ND). Much like college football, college basketball is a billion dollar business, and gaining every advantage possible is just the natural thing to do for a school that values winning over everything else.

If your "colleagues" were applying what happened many coaching staffs ago to the current UNLV team at that time, then they just aren't very intelligent. If you're applying penalties that were found under the Harry Miller days at WSU (70s) to today's program after 7 coaching changes, then I would say you suffer from the same affliction as your "colleagues".

I really love that Kyle is pretty much reading it as fact that WSU is a dirty program, all based on a rival poster that has a history of talking trash and slamming constantly on WSU and is frowned upon highly by the grammar gods. Not to mention the fact, he's just spewing it out of his fingertips with no basis for fact, sources, or anything.

Yeah, because what WSU was sanctioned for in the 70's is constantly being talked upon now and is the reason why the program is fluttering along at a snail's pace.

Again though, just like always, WSU and its fans are always the bad guys. This has pretty much gone out of control. Maybe WSU should take it a little easier on their Valley counterparts so it doesn't send them into such delusional tirades.

I think it would be fun to name current MVC teams who have had an active player arrested more recently than WSU has.

I'll start:

Northern Iowa
Illinois State
Creighton
Bradley
Southern Illinois
Drake

Those are just off the top of my head. Dirty program filled with society's problem children, indeed.

ETA: I found this article to be particularly insightful about a win-at-all-costs MVC program. Spoiler: It's not WSU...

Don't forget about this one from the program that values the "student athlete"...

http://www.kcrg.com/sports/panthers/UNI ... 98576.html

He was suspended for the Wartberg, Toledo, and North Dakota games and made it back surprisingly just in time for the Louisville game...hmmm.

So those two stories about UNI players getting 3 game suspensions for violating team rules pretty much confirm that Jacobson is following the standard athletic department 10% of the season requirement. College students are going to mess up, and when they do it's good to have a uniform standard to hold them accountable. UNI does, and Jacobson seems to be consistently following that standard.

I don't think WSU is a dirty program, and there certainly isn't any evidence of that. But I think holding student-athletes accountable according to previously agreed standards is about the opposite of dirty.

I have a couple of questions that I need answered before I can determine the veracity of this post.

First of all, who was the last WSU player arrested and when did that arrest happen?

Secondly, does Jamar Howard count?

I think you have some schools on that list that do not belong according tot he criteria you have defined.
