The promoter of Sunday’s Iowa State-Creighton men’s basketball game apologized to Bluejays coach Greg McDermott long after a basket at the horn provided the Cyclones a controversial victory at Wells Fargo Arena.
Pictures show Jamie Vanderbeken’s right hand on the ball during the 30-foot desperation shot at the same time the backboard clock light lit, signaling the end of the game.
Normally, a questionable shot is reviewed by the three officials. That wasn’t the case Sunday because the game was not televised, nor was there a courtside replay monitor.
“I told Greg that I made an incorrect assumption,” said Maury Hanks, promoter for Global Sports and a former Drake men’s basketball assistant coach. “I thought Wells Fargo Arena would have had a replay monitor, and that I was wrong to make that assumption.
“The buck stops with me on that one. I dropped the ball, and I told coach (Greg) McDermott that when I talked to him Sunday night. He was disappointed, but he handled the situation with class.”
