That's what I was assuming. From everything I've seen and read, Phelps is well-liked, if not well-respected. Personally, I think he's a great guy. Just not a good head coach.

I am summarizing but basically that he is kind of thought to be a bit arrogant and hot heated amongst the braintrust at ODU. I inferred that this thought was shared by some others in that neck of the woods as well. I am not inferring any sort of cheating or anything untoward, just that he was not the favorite son in Norfolk.

I just went to a ODU message board and found this to support what I had heard (from Monarchfans.com fwiw):

"Don't know if he is interested but how about Drake head coach Mark Phelps? He was an assistant at NC State and Arizona St but more importantly is a Va Beach guy (Kempsville), an ODU grad, and knows the recruiting game here. This year Drake is a 500 team but has had a lot of success in his previous years in the Missouri Valley. I knew him a bit in high school and college, a good guy."

Response:

"This has been discussed. Phelps is a lieing cheating low life. I would rather have a drunk Blaine Taylor than a lowlife like Phelps. Also Phelps is a main reason former ODU great Mark Furhman got fired at Atlantic Shores. It would be a disgrace to hire that [redacted] at ODU."


So it was mixed but at least one person had similar feelings.

You also mentioned Phelps being "hot heated"..... I assume you meant "hot headed". As somebody who knows Phelps personally, that is not an accurate description of him.

I took a look at the Monarch's board. Seems like basically one poster has some sort of personal beef with Phelps. Nobody else seems to care one way or another. Which probably sums up Phelp's tenure at Drake fairly well.

Oh, a lot of Drake fans care one way of another.

I also visited the ODU board.....only one guy with a beef. Sounded more personal than anything else. It also seems to involve something that happened 15+ years ago.

Look I was just relaying what I had been told in passing. I don't know Phelps or have a feel for him at all. At all. The greatest connection I have personally is talking for about 30 seconds with Justin Ohl when he was a Drake assistant at the Missouri HS Championships in probably March of 2010. Real nice guy by the way. I just heard something from a friend who probably contributes $100 a year to ODU athletics and he was at this reception with the AD. He could be embellishing. Probably so. I regret the bad, bad line. I was probably speaking out of turn there. All it really means is that ODU is not going to hire him away. So Drake will have to pay the buyout if they force him out.
