Initial reaction to your new head coach

Postby BellevueDog » March 26th, 2013, 9:45 pm

Curious how the different fan bases reacted when their new head coach was hired (but not enough to actual look it up on your message boards).

Salukis -- what did you think when you found out you were going with the old Missouri State coach?

Bradley - your initial reaction to Geno Ford?

What did you all think when Muller, McDermott, and Marshall joined your schools.

Drake Nation is semi-melting down upon news that someone named Ray Giacoletti is the front runner for the coaching position there.

With Ben Jacobson, we were happy. Known quantity, quality guy, responsible for much of UNI's success at the time.

With Greg McDermott, we were cautiously optimistic. He knew and understood UNI and was personally invested in our program as a former player.

With Sam Weaver, it was kind of out of left field. We loved Eldon Miller and some of us felt like he was pushed aside before he was ready, and earned the right to leave on his own terms.

I was 11 when Bob Bowlsby hired Elden Miller at UNI, but I truly believe it was the best thing that ever happened to our athletic department. Without Elden, there would be no MVC for UNI.

Drake has had more than their fair share of coaching busts over the past 20 years. For the sake of the conference and the sanity of the Bulldog posters here at MVCfans, I hope this guy isn't your Sam Weaver.

Ray Giacoletti was an assistant coach for Eddie Fogler at WSU for a couple of days before another school snagged him. He was supposed to be hot stuff.

To answer the question about Marshall - pretty excited. We had one of the best AD's in MVC history and the phrase 'In Schaus We Trust' had been long established so we all knew it would work out great. Gotta love a guy who loves being the hunter, no matter how much he wins. I don't think he will ever tire of "getting another BCS scalp".

Was very happy with the hire of Marshall. He had proven success at Winthrop dominating the Big South conference. Can't complain about a guy whose team was ready to name their court after him.

Marshall grows on you. I can see why many Creighton fans hate him with his antics, but hes a winner, I feel like yall will always be good as long as you keep him.

When McDermott got hired I thought he was a solid coach, at Iowa State he had many injuries to like 3 or 4 of his top 6 players, so I knew his record at ISU wasn't a good indicator. That being said, I am still cautiously optimistic. Not sure yet if he is a great coach, but I'm pretty sure he is a solid coach at worst.

When Geno Ford was hired at Bradley, I knew nothing about him, but he was exactly the bill that I was looking for. A younger guy with a proven track record at another school (back-to-back MAC regular season championships).

I think things are going to work out well for him and Bradley.

The Turgeon comparison is probably more applicable to WSU. At the time we made that hire, we were desperate to find a young "up and comer". The WSU job had become the death nail for the last 3 coaches (Cohen, Thpmson and Smithson) and I'm sure many coaches were afraid to come here. The facilities were in need of repair and we didn't have the resources to pay a top coach. In hindsight, we got lucky and it worked out. Turgeon built a foundation that allowed us to hire a top coach the next time around.

When people say that WSU will return to mediocrity if/when Marshall leaves, they have no clue what they are talking about. The program is in such a different place than it was pre-Turgeon days (even much better than the end of the Turgeon days). We will hire a proven coach and don't have to take any more chances. Of course, anything can happen, but WSU fans were excited about Marshall and confident that we finally have a program that will be good for years to come.

I thought, Sweet, we get a two for one with his future all-American son coming also. O.K., didn't know he'd be a future all-American, but I knew how much Dana wanted him and I had watched him play on t.v. and thought he was the better player on the court in comparison to Harrison Barnes - at least in the game I had seen. So, very pleased.

With Bradley two years ago, it seemed like every other day there was a story of Bradley swinging and missing at another coaching canidate. So I was very happy when they got a head coach with previous experience that wasn't a retread.

With Geno, it was a relief just to get somebody in there with actual recruiting connections as opposed to "Hi, I played in the NBA, you should come play for me."
