Giacoletti adds 2 to Drake staff

Both have extensive coaching experience in the midwest. Both have coached at a "power conference" level. But, neither has recruited for the last 2-3 years.

Overall, I like the staff that Giacoletti is putting together.

Kind of cool they are hiring a guy with Peoria roots. Hope he works out well for you and that neither of our teams have to meet again on Thursday night next year in St. Louis.

“I was raised on Missouri Valley Conference basketball,” Giacoletti said at the news conference. “I remember sitting in the rafters at Robertson Memorial Field House in Peoria since I was a little boy watching great teams come through there, great Drake teams. Lewis Lloyd of Drake is a guy I remember vividly. I’ve always wanted the opportunity to come back to the Midwest.”

I do like to see coaches with connections to certain schools/conferences coach for them.

I think they have the X's and O's covered as well as talent evaluation. It will come come down to recruiting and selling the program. I am cautiously optimistic.

Rutter always seemed like a good guy. I'm not sure he was ever a great recruiter for the Panthers, but he spent quite a few years with Mac and Jake, so that can't hurt.

Giacoletti has filled out his coaching staff with Todd Townsend, who spent the past 4 years as an assistant at Northern Illinois. He is a former Marquette player (started on Final 4 team with D Wade)

Originally, Giacoletti was going to retain Stan Johnson from Phelps' staff, but Johnson took an assistant coach job at Arizona State late last week.

Two out of three seem solid...NIU has the lowest winning percentage of MAC teams over the past 15 season. Not sure why this was an attractive choice. Probably the worst D1 program in Illinois. They have not been successful at recruiting Chicago thus they struggle year after year. Maybe I am missing something.
