Losing Creighton is tough on the Valley for many reasons but they were only our 4th biggest TV market not the largest.

I'd go with Nielsen, which has Wichita at #66 now. The others are all within one rank of that.

Not disputing the Nielsen ratings. They are what they are. It seems odd that Omaha, as the largest metropolitan area of MVC cities, ranks below Wichita/Hutchinson, Des Moines/Ames and Springfield. Based on the 2010 census, the Omaha metropolitan area was 234,000+ bigger than Wichita's metro area, 295,000+ bigger than Des Moines' metro area, and 428,000+ bigger than Springfield's metro area. It makes one wonder if the Omaha metropolitan area is somehow divided in the Nielsen media ratings.

It might be that for Wichita and other locations in the Valley, the TV market includes more area outside of the metro area.

This is just speculation on my part, so I could be completely wrong. Then again, that statement applies to most posts on boards like this.

The impact is great for the league. All this handwringing about WSU leaving is silly. Leagues evolve and change. I thought it was a bit humorous that after CU announced they were leaving they won one game in the NCAA's and WSU went to the final four. Too many haters in this thread. The comments about cycles in the league is accurate. Those at the top may be those at the bottom in a few years.

TV markets are not equivalent to metro areas.

If this link is correct, Wichita's DMA includes pretty much all of west Kansas ... which I guess would make sense as I believe Wichita networks cover most of Kansas: http://www.healthmediasyndicate.com/body.cfm?id=14 Meanwhile it seems like Lincoln is the DMA that gets credit for the rural majority of Nebraska, if I'm reading the map right.

I also don't think there is a direct correlation between population and number of TVs. I'm fairly certain Nielsen is the standard for market size, however, so I don't see much point in disagreeing with them.

There are rumors that WSU is trying to land some big neutral games with one of them being at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn

Sounds like Coach vs Cancer tournament finals

With the Final Four fresh in minds, some people can’t wait to support the Shockers. Marshall’s golf tournament and auction this month netted more than $335,000, up from $187,000 in 2012. Attendance at dinner and auction totaled 950 people, also a high.

A new contract for Marshall, complete with raise and extension, is moving along, Sexton said.

“We are making great progress and working toward some changes for his contract,” Sexton said. “Gregg’s commitment to us, and our commitment to him, has continued to be evident.”

The Final Four run has WSU in excellent position to beat out the Jayhawks for the top in-state recruit in his class:
