While I do believe that Wichita State should be the favorites and should also be favored to win the Valley by 2 or more games even, to hint at them pulling an SIU 17-1 run I think is a little over the top. The reason I feel that isn't that they aren't going to be a good team with chances of making noise in the NCAA's again, it is that the team is built more for making noise in the NCAA's and against other "BCS" caliber programs/athletes than the more deliberate pace of Valley play.

I think the style in the Valley is such that it will probably lead to 3-4 losses for the Shockers simply by the nature of being in the low-scoring, pace of play type games that will keep Valley opponents in the game and give them a chance to knock higher-paced preference teams off late in close games. This is why WSU has typically struggled with Evansville and UNI (and even SIU). They will still have the blow-outs where everything clicks (such as the UNI at WSU game this last year) but they will also have the close losses (such as the WSU at UNI game this last year). Probably more of the wins than losses, especially non-conference, but in-conference is where they will find a lot of the teams that will really 'deliberate' it up on them and cause issues. 15-3, 14-4, almost certain, 17-1 not as likely, IMO.

And as for the UNI thread, I agree with those that say we are probably going to be really good in two years (once our incoming freshman have a year of seasoning and Jesperson is eligible), but that doesn't me we will be a team of push-overs this year. I see us being the same style of stingy defense and deliberate offense as we have been with how well we shoot being the major factor in whether we win or lose most games.

Great post on why WSU won't be 17-1!

While the Shockers should be good in 2014-15, and the Redbirds are putting together the right roster for a competitive run the same year, it's the Panthers that have ALL the pieces laid out for a championship. I will be curious to see what UNI and ISUr do this year as a build up to 14-15. MSU is one dominant big dude away from being right there.

In my estimation, 2013-14 will be a big dip in overall MVC play while 14-15 will be a huge upswing in competitiveness.

While I agree with a lot of that, WSU was 16-2 in conference two seasons ago. We were a 3OT loss to Drake on the road away from matching SIU's 17-1 record.

WSU is a deeper team next season than they were that season. Our starting lineup, at least in the offseason, looks like it will be better if Coleby is a good fit, and undoubtedly more experienced. And the Valley is significantly weaker.

Why didn't the natural style of the Valley stop WSU from having a 16-2 record two seasons ago? Yeah, our record wasn't as good last year, but we also were missing three starters at one point, and were lacking Baker/Wessel as starters for the entire conference schedule. What thinking leads you to believe WSU can't match their output from the 2011-2012 season? Is WSU going to be worse? Is the Valley going to be better?

As for the UNI thread, I don't think that has anything to do with WSU. UNI lost three of the top four scorers for this coming season ... clearly they'll return more and be better set for a run the season after.

This part of the quote is brilliant. I applaud both your intelligence and your courage to post this.

When you invoke Weber's Great Salukis, I think it's only fair that someone asks the question.
