Joey King leaves Drake

Had a lot of potential. 6'8" could jump, hit the 3, and finish with either hand around the basket.

Really bad timing, and caught the coaching staff off guard. No way to replace him this late.

Pretty significant loss. Add in Mason transferring and that's two pretty good MVC freshman who won't be sophomores at Drake next year.

I was always very impressed with his play when I watched Drake. I believed he was going to develop into a pretty good player. Tough loss for the Bulldogs.

Heading to Minnesota and trying to play this year::
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Gophers basketball team has added another Minnesota native to the roster.

Forward Joey King, a transfer from Drake, signed his scholarship tender Tuesday. His application with the NCAA to be eligible to play this season is pending.

King joins guards Deandre Mathieu, Daquien McNeil and Malik Smith as members of coach Richard Pitino's first recruiting class at Minnesota. Smith transferred from Florida International.

King is a native of Eagan. He led Eastview High School to the state tournament in 2012, averaging 24 points and six rebounds per game as a senior.

Last season for Drake, the 6-foot-9, 215-pound King played in all 32 games and was named to the Missouri Valley Conference all-freshman team. He shot almost 35 percent from 3-point range, going 33 for 95.

The original transfer article isn't available anymore. Can anyone provide some insight as to why he thinks there's a chance he could be deemed eligible this season, instead of having to sit out a year?

None of the articles have ever mentioned a specific reason.....only something vague about wanting to be closer to a sick relative.

But, in an article from a few days ago, King mentions that the other schools he was considering were Creighton and Saint Louis....both of which are further from home than Drake. Seems obvious that the whole "need to be closer to home" is b.s.

King is a good player, but I have heard him described in negative terms by fellow athletes at Drake. He also flat out lied to the new coaching staff.

Good riddance.

Yeah that's BS. Hope the NCAA sees right through that smoke screen and makes him sit out.

Then it'd be nice to see one or two Valley teams blow up the Gophers while he rides the pine.

Um, Joey King showed promise at Drake last year, but Golden Gopher promise?

Anybody who can even show promise while playing Phelpsball has to be pretty good.
