Shocker Fans have pretty much always thought Marshall would leave for an elite job (Duke, UNC, etc.). it's the other Valley fans that insisted Marshall would've left for an NC State, Nebraska, or Texas Tech by now.

This is quite reasonable, and if Duke or UNC comes calling I imagine he'll bolt. That said, UCLA did offer an opportunity to be the head coach, but what they didn't do was offer him crazy west coast money. Gregg has shown that he won't bolt for just anyone.

They offered him 2.6 million, the same pay Steve Alford accepted. That contract would have put Coach Marshall in the top 10 highest paid coaches in the country.

What will force Gregg to leave WSU is the rest of the Valley blowing. If there aren't teams vying for at large births on a consistent basis outside of Wichita, I think he'll eventually leave. This leaves most Valley fans in a conundrum. Pray for your own team to suck, and WSU will lose Marshall....become competitive and Marshall whips everyone's ass for the foreseeable future. Tough either way.

If WSU's entire starting 5 gets injured they aren't going to lose 7 games in the Valley.

I can't believe a 30 year old is that f***ing stupid.

I could see Indiana State making a run this season. I think they're really good. However, there is a better chance of WSU losing 7 games than UNI getting to the Elite 8.

This. Are you worried that time is getting closer? With Creighton leaving and taking their share of the publicity and SOS with them, that does not help the league. Then look at the tournament thread. Outside of uni and wsu, their is no help there. Odds are we are a one-bid league barring stl upsets. Can WSU continue to pay him enough when the tv money and NCAA units dry up?

NCAA units aren't going to dry up. The 2006 units are already gone, and we're in the stretch of one bid appearances now. Even the Final Four units aren't that important for keeping him. On a per team, per year basis, it isn't that high. And what TV money? The MVC pays to be on ESPN, not the other way around.

WSU won't lose him because we can't pay him. We might lose him because the Valley sucks ... Although how you're ignoring Indiana State here, who I think have by far the best chance to make us a multi bid league, is beyond me.

We're worried about Duke or UNC. He's a Carolina guy and almost no one could turn down those jobs. I think he'll have competition from Smart for those same elite jobs, though, and I think Duke probably sticks with a Coach K guy.

Really tho ....I side with you on the idea you have kicked our ass for 10 yrs? close enough to making sense for me.

You dont think you are blowing Marshall up a lil much?!

Tech........Im still 29 so .......

IQ? hahahahahahahahah

What does my intelligence have to do with Marshall's coaching?

If you can act like hes the best coach ever then I can act like hes the worst!

7 loses is counting a loss in st louis too just FYI since you took that so seriously.

I don't think that's entirely true. I look at Shockernet from time to time and I recall seeing a quite a few shocker fans worried about those other jobs as well. Including some that thought he would actually take some of those jobs.

Regardless I think he showed a lot of character by turning down the UCLA job. Plus he's just got it pretty good in Wichita. I would imagine he's one of the most popular and beloved people in the city. It reminds me a bit of Charlie Spoonhour's run in Spfld years ago.

Although Charlie didn't take us to the level Marshall has taken WSU - he did seem to improve the program just about every year he was here. That along with his genuinely likeable personality made him THE local celebrity for most of those 9 years (along with the Lady Bears coach who took them to the F4).

I hope turning down the UCLA job is a matter of character, but it also makes logical business sense.

Cost of living is significantly higher in LA than Wichita. $2.6 million in LA is about equivalent to $1.8 million in Wichita. He'll probably make that next year. So, really, he didn't turn down much in the way of money.

Job security wise, UCLA is a joke. No one is going to keep a job at UCLA without multiple national championships.

I've never been worried about the little jobs. WSU will be able to pay Marshall up to maybe $2.5 million before we can't compete anymore. With cost of living adjustments to most places he'd look to go to, that makes us competitive to a bit over $3 million. At that point, there are no more than 10 jobs we'd have to be truly worried about -- Duke, UNC, Louisville, Kentucky, Kansas, Michigan State, Florida, Ohio State. Most of those guys aren't going anywhere soon unless the NBA talks them into moving.

Now this is probably the nightmare scenario for most WSU fans: What if Self went to take on an NBA job and Kansas came offering Marshall $3-4 million a year? I actually could see that as being the most likely immediate threat to keeping him. I can't imagine Marshall actually taking that job -- but if he did, Wichita would melt down. And it would make complete sense for Kansas -- if I were them, I'd want Marshall or Smart, and getting Marshall would have the dual impact of seriously hurting a very strong in-state team.

Or would Marshall be crazy enough to think he could turn around the Charlotte Bobcats? Can't see that happening, either, but it's a possibility.

Man, the only thing keeping me from being a Geno/Bradley fan is this numbskull.

If he's this bad now, imagine how bad he's going to be if Bradley actually wins more games than it loses, or avoids Thursday night rendezvouses.
