He was the highest rated MVC recruit that year...higher than Rayvonte Rice who was Mr. basketball in Illinois. He was probably not top 150 but was close. Surely we wasn't the "best recruit in Panther history?"

Umm ... I don't know about that.

ESPN: 28th at his position and no national ranking.
Scout: 3*, 35th at his position.
Rivals: 3*, no rankings at all.

I can't find anything else for him. UNI fans have a legit argument about McDermott being forced to sit out, but let's be real here ... he wasn't a big recruit. He wasn't top 150 in the nation, and there was zero reason for anyone to think he was going to be one of the best recruits in UNI history. He was an average recruit who didn't even start for his HS team until his senior year. Don't change history to make it sound like this was a big deal when it happened.

I could be wrong (wouldn't be the first time) but I believe Scout ranks each position "in order", meaning the 35th best SF would be the 175th ranked player ( #35 SF * 5 positions to be ranked).

At one point he was a top 150, but fell out.

There was a big deal about it in the news for a while because his HS team had him and Harrison Barnes both ranked in the top 150 at one point.

He apparently fell out though..

My apologies.

If that's how they do it, it's awfully silly. Does that make their top 5 a player from each position?

I don't remember Teddy ever being a Top 150. He think that he was around 200.

I think you're right. I've never noticed that before. What a weird way to do it.

McDermott was likely a top 200 player. Maybe "average" recruit was too harsh. He was a good recruit, but saying "best in UNI history" is going a bit crazy with it. If that's the case, UNI fans must be phenomenally scared of Fred Van Vleet (top 90 by at least ESPN and Scout).

Name another recruit that was as touted as Doug McDermott that we've signed...seriously.

Jeremy Morgan is probably the closets thing right now. He had offers from UNI, Creighton, Iowa State, Rice, Weber State. No stars on Rivals, was the #36 national SG and a 3 star according to 247sports...but he was Iowa's Gatorade Player of the Year, could easily have won Iowa's Mr. Basketball but that went to a kid who signed with Iowa (mostly because he signed with Iowa), and there is a strong consensious that had he not commited in June 2012 before his senior season he would have had offers from Iowa, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and a couple other "big programs" that were on him at that point. Morgan is a TREMENDOUS talent and will be great for UNI.

Schools really stopped recruiting Jeremy after he comitted to UNI because he was 100% sold on UNI. That also meant that his recruiting "stats" weren't going to change as the big time recruiting services weren't going to update a player signing with UNI.

However, I don't think he was as highly touted at Doug. McDermott was a 91 rating on ESPN, 3 star ESPN/Scout, 28th rated SF nationally on Scout, 3 star on rivals, 3 star on 247 with higher ratings to get to that 3 start, etc... Schools also really stopped recruiting Doug as well after committing to UNI because it was pretty clear that there was no way he wasn't going to UNI - barring what actually happened.

UNI hasn't traditionally signed high profile recruits....

Adam Koch had an offer from West Virginia, but wasn't highly recruited
Jordan committed before he played a game in high school
Ali was a JUCO with no other offers
We were AJ's only non D2 offer
Deon had some pretty good offers - Arizona, Marquette, etc...

We've gotten a ton of production from guys who weren't big time recruits.

That is becoming evident with every new signing class and it being pretty obvious it's the highest rated/touted class, replacing the year before for that honor the last 3-4 years

Can we put to rest that ISU fans should be kissing Marshall's feet for "allowing" Teddy to play at all now???

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaab-the ... um=twitter

League commissioner Doug Elgin said Illinois State proposed the Valley to grant Hawkins partial relief from the two-year rule by allowing him to play in every game during the 2014-15 season except the Redbirds' two regular-season matchups against Wichita State. A committee of five league officials met about the request for three hours and ultimately decided to grant it last week.

Link also discusses the difference in this situation and McDermott...

Yes. ISUR is the bad guy here that screwed the league's competitive balance. Put the responsibility w here it should be.
