Evansville consistently good? I'd like to see some stats to back up that claim.

You are right that they haven't been good at the same level as UNI, or Wichita State (EDIT: I had "even" before Wichita State to show that Wichita State's had to rebuild from Marshall's first year, but that made it seem like Wichita State hasn't been good). I was mostly referring to my impressions of them the last few years as fairly consistent team and my belief that they will be good in the coming years with their core and the depletion of the league's talent. I shouldn't have made "good" the emphasis, but consistent.

I believe that the real key for the Valley will be the teams like Bradley and Loyola (possibly Missouri State and SIU). These teams have the pocketbooks to improve themselves

Missouri State and SIU with deep pocketbooks? SIU sank to unprecedented depths under Lowery because SIU could not afford to fire him when it was needed. MSU is on the low end of the BB coaching pay scales in the Valley. MSU is more often seen as financially challenged rather thn having deep pockets. Hammond gives them buildings that he can put his name on, but he isn't giving them much scholarship money for a FB team that doesn't draw real well.
[/quote]

Again, this was an error in my communication. Bradley and Loyola have the potential to improve because they have money, whereas SIU and MSU were included for past success.

If the Valley is going to remain competitive, there are going to have to be a lot of alumni making big contributions to support athletic department budgets. Paying a coach $750,000 a year doesn't guarantee a winning program, but paying less than $500K is almost a guarantee that your coach will leave as soon as he has some success. Jacobsen at UNI is bout the only exception to that I've seen in the last decade.

I agree. College basketball is a coach's sport, and the MVC needs better coaches. Most of the time that means spending money, but if you can get a quality coach for cheap that is also good.

Perhaps I am a worry wart but five years from now worries me some. I sometimes feel the league is held together with duct tape and chewing gum while operating with smoke and mirrors. Perhaps my analogies are overboard but my concern is something Red alluded to it.

The MVC is a bit of a hodge podge. A mixture of public and private schools. Some of the privates are religious base and some are secular. Some of the public schools want to do more with football while others are content with the status quo and one public wants nothing to do with football and would pull a Creighton if ever given a chance. Do I worry too much about what on the surface looks to be very different agendas?

I hope I worry too much and that the league stays intact for a long time. We are privilged to see the quality of basketball that we do but the original poster is correct. Some other schools need to rise up and challenge WSU.

(On another note, those who speak unfavorably of Muller at my IlSU may be speaking prematurely. Yes last season was a disappointment and this season may turn out the same way with all of the new faces. On the other hand, Muller had an outstanding recruiting class so I am looking forward to the next few years at RBA. Time will tell.)

Our basketball program gets everything it wants. Jake makes top 3 of the Valley money, we fly everywhere and Jake gets whatever he wants, whenever he wants it. Can you say that about the others??

That's why his salary is "low". He would rather dump money into assistants, recruiting, travel, etc...than worry about making 800k over 600kk..or whatever he makes now.

He has stated many times he enjoys CF, as does his family. He doesn't need to make, or live a life style, that requires millions per year to be happy in Cf. The TAMU situation goes along with that.

I'm not naive enough to believe he will be here for decades, but I have very little concern over his pay

Agree. Bradley draws well, even in down times. Attendance generates money, and most Valley teams are terrible at filling the arenas, save the 1 upswing year. Thats not good.

Boosting the prestige basically boils down to 1 thing: win in the non-con, both pre-conference, and post-season. Going 0-10 in the noncon, and 12-6 in league and beating a top contender once does nothing but detrimental.

LOL. I guess Jake doesn't want a town with a four star restaurant or a campus littered with pretty girls. Because he doesn't have those things right now. Haha.

I'm not sure why a head coach is concerned about co-eds or 4 star restaurants....

UNI has a co ed population, per capita, on par with any campus I've ever been on.

While not 4 star, the dining establishments in CF are very good

You obviously haven't had Larry Eustachy as your coach....
