Particularly, this year it has been well established that Muller is willing to take recruiting risks. He dismissed some good players (Threloff and Ekey come to mind) and brought in a group of players that can't play…Hawkins is not eligible for the second straight year…after being kicked off of his prep team. McIntosh is not eligible due to his foreign status. Lofton had questionable eligibility, but it looks like he's good now. Knight committed a class III felony. Are any of these kids bad kids? Probably not. Are these kids high risk? Yes. There is a likelihood that Muller is willing to take other risks, and since only two players return from last year's team, I think it is fair to ask if there are any issues with the roster.
I think a lot of Redbird fans would contend that some of the players Muller "let go" are not that great. The only big loss I see is Johnny Hill. Honestly, Threloff never really did anything for us and it seemed like Ekey was in his prime for us his freshman year. I don't think Muller was really going to ever play Threloff much at all, so Threloff is in a better situation now and he scored 17 points in an exhibition game. You could argue Ekey is a loss, probably the second biggest loss out of the group that left, but I really only see Johnny Hill as being a big loss. For Ekey being a junior that had played a lot in previous years compared to Hill being a sophomore that played sparingly the year before, Hill made much more of an impact last year. He was the only one that had a major role on last year's team and that I feel could have made an impact this season. I feel like it's a given you have to take risks when you're bringing that many new players, so that's not much of a surprise to me. When you need to recruit that many guys In order to fill the roster to replace all the departed players, risks are going to need to be taken.
