No, it's a non-DI crowd on a Tuesday night in the fourth largest metropolitan area in North America.

This.

It should also be noted that the band wasn't even playing tonight. Not an excuse, but i'd imagine the opponent had a whole bunch to do with it.

You're right, it's not an excuse, it's an indictment. The band gets to pick and choose what volleyball match or lacrosse event they want to attend...NOT men's basketball, at least not in this league.

I've been mostly pleased with what I've seen from the Loyola contingent so far, but this is low rent.

1,300 .......

Really, what did anybody expect with Loyola - they only averaged 2,200 last year. Another stupid move by Elgin. But once WSU and MSU leave the conference the illinois and iowa teams can wallow in mediocrity.

Holy crap...what a s**tty comment...I can't believe I defended WSU fans earlier today. Well, until Wichita State is brought up to the NBA Western Division, hope WSU doesn't look past the MVC games they have to play this year.

According to Nielsen, the Chicago media market is third largest in the US with 7,910,200 people over the age of 12. The second largest media market in the current MVC is Des Moines, at 73rd in the country, with 682,600 people 12 years or older. That's 1/12 as many people as Chicago. Wichita, at 101st in the country with 499,700 people over the age of 12, is third. So Chicago is almost 16x the size of the third largest market in the league. The Chicago media market has MORE THAN DOUBLE the number of people of the other 9 MVC metro areas COMBINED.

When it comes to eyeballs (not to mention average expendable income-- where the Chicago area exceeds every other market in the current MVC by 20% or more), adding a team in the Chicago area suddenly makes the MVC a TV-worthy league. I think it's already apparent that between the ESPN networks and ComcastSportsNet out of Chicago, the MVC is getting a lot more coverage. So what's the big, misplaced fuss about schools having to draw 6000+?

UCLA's Pauly Pavilion seated a maximum of 9200 people before its recent renovation. St. Joseph University's gym seats 4200. Loyola just recently played Tulane, whose gym seats 3600 and is rarely filled. Attendance is important, but it is not the ultimate key to success.

Ummm, You do understand that fans don't play the basketball game right? Nothing a fan says on message board will impact how a team will play. In Loyola case they don't even attend games.

Went and watched the Salukis play at AP tonight. Quite a come back as they were 15 down at one time.
Desmar Jackson made a terrific move to the basket and a dunk, that was the play of the night. I was impressed with freshman Sean O'Brien.

Seems the free throws may have been the Salukis downfall.

The Chicago Tribune's Fred Mitchell raves about Loyola freshman Milton Doyle, who had 24 points on 10 of 13 shooting, five rebounds, five assists, three steals and a block.

P.S. Even in the decline of printed media, the Chicago Tribune has more subscribers than the Peoria metropolitan area has people.

Tonight's SIU results and Loyola's attendance are exactly what I expected going into this season.
