This might be one of the best posts of all time. Picture and all.

Looks like he is doing a good job turning it around.

MEN'S BASKETBALL STANDINGS

SCHOOL CONF OVERALL
Wichita State 3-0 16-0
Indiana State 3-0 12-3
Missouri State 2-1 12-3
Northern Iowa 2-1 8-7
Drake 1-2 10-5
Illinois State 1-2 8-7
Loyola 1-2 6-9
Bradley 1-2 6-10
Southern Illinois 1-2 5-11
Evansville 0-3 7-9

Marty is doing good with no more than he gets paid. How do you expect him to turn it around as fast as WSU when your coach makes 3x more? Also we are the youngest team in the country. We have players that got offers from FGCU and were recruited by Louisville and our asst Elgas worked at Utah and K-St so that shows we are getting the right and top recruits. You have to keep in mind that if you were to get rid of Marty, Blake would go too. That would be a huge loss for this program that is back on track with losing a future AA.

I'm getting tired of the statements like this "Marty is doing good with no more than he gets paid."
If the guy isn't putting forth his best effort because he isn't getting paid as much as others, then there is a real problem. Paying the current coach more (unless it is a "reward") SHOULD NOT have any impact on his performance.

This is a valid argument during the search for a coach, as is directly affects the pool of choices.

If Marty didn't want to work for his current salary, then he should never have taken the position.

Lets move on the the issues with the game schemes that he puts forth on the floor.
In my opinion, there is really no need to prepare for a game against Evansville. The O & D will be the same year after year, game after game. With the exception of the first 4 or 5 games of this year, Evansville will;

Offense
- not push the ball on the break
- not consistently feed the post (or even allow the big to touch the ball within 10 feet of the basket on 85% of all possessions)
- have terrible spacing - many times the ball defender of the ball can double the post AND guard his man closely AT THE SAME TIME
- the guards will try to drive into a clogged lane (2 other ACES & 3 defenders) and get stripped or blocked
- no more than two on the floor will take an open shot early in the shot clock
- can't inbound under the basket
- the starters will start the second half
- the same starting lineup will be used in 96% of all games

Defense
- play man to man
- double every time the ball is in the paint - regardless of who it is, i.e. 5'10" guard
- give up the open pop-out 3
- give up the open opposite side 3
- have their back to the inbounder under the basket
- not protect the angle to the rim on under basket inbounds
- not press
- not play some sort of zone 3-2 2-2-1 against quick teams that like to shoot the 3

This is the plan to beat a Marty coached Evansville team

Offense,
Post 1 man
park 2-3 outside the 3 point line
drive and kick
lots of quick passing (no dribble unless it is to the lane)
hit 3s

Defense,
Double the leading scorer (DJ this year)
Pack the lane with the other defenders

Basically when a Marty coached Evansville team is next on your schedule, you can use the practice time on fundamentals, not specific game prep.

I am very frustrated at the apparent lack of adaptability of Marty's approach. The successful coaches have a base philosophy, but they adapt to the current group of players on their roster. They also adapt to who is on in each specific game. If they find a kid who is playing well, they come back to him, not leave him on the bench the entire second half.

Please tell me I am wrong.

Prior to Wednesday we have had a lot of trouble beating a Marty Simmons coached team. However, the difference between the team this year, and the teams in the past is Colt Ryan.
