MVC post-season awards

Postby MVCfans » February 27th, 2014, 8:06 pm

I am finalizing my COY, FOY, NOY, and DPOY as we speak. I hope to get those posted tomorrow or Saturday followed by my All-MVC teams on Sunday. If you want to make a case for someone, speak now or forever hold your peace,

I didn't pick a preseason COY, but I think I chose both Doyle and Washpun before the season started. The trouble I'm having with my All-MVC teams is how many Shockers make first team and which player gets POY?

COY: A snow drift on I-57
SIU's 5-3 February is deserving of this award.

POY: Ron Baker or FVV. Toss a coin.

FOY: Reggie Lynch (ILSU)
I didn't see every game at Ford Center this season, but Lynch was one of the freshmen who stood out to me.
HM: Tyler Smithpeters (SIU)
HM: Austin Ruder (MSU)

NOY: Milton Doyle (LUC)
Doyle is technically a transfer, although I'm not sure he ever played for the Jayhawks. (Does that mean he is eligible for FOY?) I think his ceiling is very high, especially if Loyola can develop a center/forward to complement him.
HM: Washpun (UNI).

DPOY: Egidijus Mockevicius (EVAN)
MVC's top rebounder, 2nd in blocks and probably the main reason Evansville's opponents don't put up 80 every game.
HM: Baker, Cotton and VanVleet (WSU). Stellar team defense.
HM: Khristian Smith

6th Man
: Khristian Smith.
INSU has only one MVC loss when Smith has 10 or more points, and that was against WSU.

Hard to argue with a lot on here but I don't see anyway Washpun wins NOY. Doyle and Knight each won the weekly award 4 times and have better #s nearly across the board. If Doyle qualifies for NOY, it's his. If not, it's Knight.

There was a good article in a Terre Haute paper regarding the first team, and they were pushing for four Shockers. Granted, he admitted it was easy for him since he didn't get to vote for Odum.

Still, I think his reasoning is sound.

My opinion: If I could draft a starting lineup from the MVC, I would take all four of the main Shockers.

I think Van Vleet is better than Odum and he'd be my starting point guard. I don't think anyone would argue with that at this point. He's better than Odum in nearly every statistical category this year ... Odum only wins ppg and rpg, both barely, and Van Vleet is a far more efficient shooter, with much higher FG% and 3PT%. More assists, less TOs, etc. And the gap between FVV/Odum and the rest of the Valley PGs is drastic.

I think Baker is the best shooting guard in the league. I think he's one of the best in the country, and I think every coach in the Valley would start him at the 2, and eight teams would start him at the 1.

I think Tekele Cotton is better than any other option at the 3. He's the defensive player of the year without a doubt. I think he's the one likely to be left off the first team, though, because he lacks the obvious stats.

I think Cleanthony Early is by far the best 4 in the league. It's not close.

I would actually probably take Mock at the 5 if I was drafting a team. As far as an award goes with the 5, though, I'd take Tuttle. I'd probably take Odum out of position just to name the best five, though.

I seriously bet that would be Marshall's starting five as well (with Mock) if he had his choice.

I don't think Balentine is a 1st teamer (poor defense, system guy on offense). I don't think Jackson is the best player on his team (Beane). I think Lemon is a turnover machine and a detriment to his team. I'd give 2nd team to Balentine, Gulley, Jackson/Beane, whichever of Odum/Tuttle I didn't take, and Pickett.

Player of the year is a toss-up. I think WSU's success is most directly related to FVV or Baker over Early, though, although any of the three are worthy.

I'll make a case for a couple of ISU guys.

Daishon Knight (NOY). Has won the MVC's Newcomer of the Week 4 times this season. Leads ISU in scoring (13.3 ppg), which is good enough for 10th best in the conference. Also averages 4.5 boards per game, 16th best in the conference. Pretty good, considering he is only 6'1, the top 15 are all 6'4 and taller.

I am sure this will go to Doyle but:
Reggie Lynch (FOY). Leads the conference in blocks(75) by 20 over the next closet player. Only one freshman in the league has ever blocked more shots in a season than he has (Benoit Benjamin 92). Lynch is 34th best in the Nation in blocks. Offensively, he is 2nd in the conference in field goal % 61, trailing Mockevicius by 2%. Averages 8 ppg and 4.6 boards per.

I think Indy State's Khristian Smith (11ppg, 4.3 boards per) for 6th man.

Doyle is a freshman and is 100% eligible for the award which I expect he will win handily.

Mock is a good, solid player but I don't know how you could justify a player from Evansville, literally the worst defensive team in the league, over someone (Cotton) from Wichita State, the best defensive team by a good margin. A lot of things go into defense and your best defense for Mock is that you assume he is keeping opponents from scoring an extra 6.5 pts a game. I really don't think anyone else is in the running for this award besides Cotton.
[Insert snappy comeback]
