What constitutes a great season for WSU?

Postby gobirds85 » February 28th, 2014, 10:00 am

I expect WSU to run the table in the Lou. I hope and expect them to get a #1 seed. I love the argument some morons are using against them by saying look at what happened to Gonzaga last year. Maybe they should look to see who beat the 'Zags. Idiots.

That being said...how far does WSU have to go to still have a great season? I assume they will be placed in a stacked region in an effort to take them down early, but what does everyone think? They will not get beat in the first round, but what happens if they get upset in the round of 23? Or the Sweet 16? Does this detract from an incredible run?

I would love to see them in the Final Four again. Thoughts...

Being a 1 seed you better be really good. Everyone will be gunning for you. It will be more difficult to reach the Final Four this year. Last year no one expected it from the 8 seed. This year if they are a 1 they will be the top dogs and be gunned for.

I think it has already been a great season for them. No matter what happens from here on out they are the first Men's team to reach 30-0 in the regular season. Granted the WSU fans probably won't agree and think they need to make a run in the tournament, but it obviously has been a great season already.

History s not on WSU side in the Lou. Now it also depends on who they matchup with. But in all honesty I feel like the Sycamores maybe the Bears (But they dont have MM) are really the only "threat" to WSU. But as of lately Sycamores might not even make it to championship game so this would be a pointless mesage from me.

What about UNI with Buss back? They look pretty stout and I believe they will be the 3 seed?

We were the 9 seed. But I agree ... we will have a big target on us. No one will be overlooking us this time. Although if Ohio State and Louisville overlooked us last year, they were idiots by that point.

The good thing: WSU has been a target since day one this year, and especially in the Valley. They're used to everyone gunning for them, especially in packed, hostile stadiums. They're the only team in the country that's played one and done ball for months. I guess we'll see if that was enough preparation.

I think only a loss to a 16 seed would eliminate their accomplishments so far. Elite 8 for the postseason run to be considered great as well.

30-0 is already a GREAT season, by any standard, for any team. 31-0 makes it a historic season! 34-0 makes it a top 10 season for any team that didn't win a National Championship.

As for the tourney…

WSU has been ranked between 2 and 16 in the AP and Coaches poll every week. The polls on a week by week basis respectively:

16/16
16/16
14/16
12/12
11/10
12/8
11/9
10/8
8/7
6/6
5/5
5/4
4/3
4/2
4/2
3/3
2/2

Less than a Sweet 16 will be disappointing, but still great season. An Elite 8 would make it the greatest season in WSU history IMO. A final four puts us even with Indiana State in 79/UNLV in 91, and shuts up all the nay-sayers. Anything beyond that, and the 2013-14 Wichita State Shockers will be known as one of the most dominant teams in the post-Wooden era.

Dealing with some of you could be insufferable in the future but I want one of these to happen.

30-0 is quite an accomplishment already. I don't think what that means has really sunk in to many WSU fans. I'm not fond of the "first school in D1 history to open a season at 30-0 during the regular season" hype. Going 30-0 through most of D1 history has required getting W #30 in the post-season, which strikes me as more of an accomplishment than doing it outside of post-season tournament play.

At this point, the next accomplishment is to establish a national "name". An E8 and WSU will gain a couple of notches of national respect. Another F4, and it will get a little nuts. Making it to the NC game would put WSU into conversations normally reserved for the blue bloods of college basketball.

S16 would probably be about a break even with what's already happened this year. Not making a S16 would expose WSU as the frauds the haters have been claiming they are.

As far as Shocker fans becoming intolerable, I think Shocker fans have been rather subdued on this board compared to what I expected with the results WSU has achieved. WSU fans have a lot to brag about, but have mainly kept their posts either reporting facts, or giving opinions that haven't appeared to be gloating, condescending, or just flat over the top chest thumping.

I don't think this board would be so fortunate if it were CU doing in the MVC what the Shox are doing.

Well said! The shox are 1 game away from an undefeated regular season. Next Friday the new season begins.
