They were too busy kissing the footsteps of Jabari Parker and they missed their window.

In another article about VanVleet, he was asked about this. He committed to WSU in the middle of the summer AAU season (first week of July, I think). Then the big boys started calling, inquiring how firm his commitment was. His response was, and I paraphrase, "I'm the same player now that I was last month. You saw me play in June. I saw you at my games. Why are you so interested now?"

The kid is just flat out solid.

I haven't heard that response from him. That's an excellent response.

Anyone who ignored him was a fool. I remember being wow'ed watching his high school tapes. His basketball IQ is off the charts.

Here was a good article and VanVleet's old coach lists some teams that came calling AFTER his commitment to WSU. Some interesting schools on the list....

How many schools tried to get VanVleet to decommit?

"Off the top of my head ... Iowa, Clemson, Stanford, Creighton, Kansas, Illinois, Providence, Nebraska and Tennessee," answered Doc Cornell, who coached VanVleet on a relatively small summer team called Pryme Tyme. "All of those schools, and more, started calling."
