In a world with no consequences I don't think anyone, even Jacobson let's Doug leave UNI. But can you imagine telling a friend and his son that you aren't letting them play together? I can bet the McDermott's wouldn't be too happy and it would really darken the relationship if UNI made it where Doug lost some eligibility in the process. It was a lose-lose situation. You're losing the kid either way, you may as well try to maintain the friendship.
[Insert snappy comeback]

This speaks quite positively to the fact that Ben Jacobsen is a very classy guy.

What was he going to do - Elgin made the decision. Got to give it to Jacobsen for being a team guy for the conference. But just imagine (if the Wookie hadn't gotten fired - for at least 1 more year) - what type of run UNI might have been on if McDermott showed up on UNI campus. Maybe in another parallel universe....

Is this a what came first question, the chicken or the egg? What came first? Did Jacobsen say it was OK prior to Elgin or did he acquiesce after Elgin? I seem to remember the former not the latter but I could be wrong.

I didn't say it wasn't anything worth bringing up. Just seems silly for that of all things to be the major issue. If it was a complimentary reason, sure -- "This is why we hate him, and he reinforced it with the press conference, yadda yadda yadda."

I don't agree with him doing it, but that's more because really, in the length of one's career, a single moment really doesn't have that much weight. Why do something that might color your public perception for the next two decades because you were mad at one game?

But in the grand pantheons of things that could make an entire fanbase hate a coach, "wouldn't wait in line" is one of the more fun things I've heard.

Like universities around the country don't break their admittance criteria all the time.

The majority of D1 athletes wouldn't get accepted into those schools if it wasn't for athletics. Those schools "break their own admittance criteria" continuously.
