Expectations were not low. Everyone, almost universally, picked UNI to finish 2nd and contend for an NCAA bid in the preseason.

And yet every argument from a UNI fan for why he deserved it rests on not getting any preseason AP votes.

He was picked to finish second and he finished second. Marshall was picked to finish 1st and finished first. Still don't see any legitimate argument for Jacobson here.

He went 27-3 (16-2) AP ranked #11. That, in and of itself, is a fantastic achievement worthy of the award.

It really has nothing to do with last season.

I'd bet you didn't post this same ridiculous rant back then that Gregg did not measure up to McDermott.

Not at all. Not sure where the thread about Coach of the Year previous is at now, but if you find my post about how the award nearly exclusively goes to the winner of the conference, I specifically said that I thought Marshall only won it that year because Creighton was leaving the conference and the voters penalized McDermott as COY because of it.

However, I could still play devil's advocate and make a legitimate argument for Marshall winning that year that doesn't rely on his own poor performance in a past year: He finished within one game of first place down several starters. There were extenuating circumstances that year.

I'm not an extenuating circumstances guy, so I would have still given it to McDermott. But at least I can play devil's advocate and make a legitimate argument for it. I can't see what UNI fan making an argument for Jacobson to win this award that doesn't rely on him doing a bad job last year.

Marshall went 27-3 (17-1) AP ranked #8. That, in and of itself, is better. So, once again, unless your argument accounts for last year, you're going nowhere.

I think it's odd that fans who continually bemoan that "the rest of the league sucks" would begrudge an award to a coach from another team who got to a Top 10 ranking.

It's an indictment because he won the award without winning the conference.

I've already pointed out in the past that since 1997, the winner of the conference wins the COY award almost exclusively. Two exceptions in nearly 20 years.

For Marshall not to win the award with a 16-1 record and one of the best MVC conference performances of all time is absolutely an indictment on Jacobson. It says that he did good enough, and no one really expects him to actually compete with Marshall anyway.

It's an expectations thing. Marshall's talent is factored into his expectations, and because Jacobson has lower expectations, he is credited more for performing well. Not as well as Marshall, but "good enough." It's like giving Moser the award for finishing several spots better than one could realistically expect from "that program" with "that coach."

Jacobson had an upper-classmen heavy team and failed to win the conference. Marshall had 8 newcomers on this year's team and finished with one of the best performances of all time.

None of that discredits Jacobson's performance. He did a fantastic job. However, no question, he did not do a better job than Marshall, and giving him an award for finishing second is a patronizing pat on the head to a coach who is too good for such platitudes.

Good thinking. I look forward to watching UNI in the Final Four when they get all those starters back from injury.

Having said that, I would have had no problem with McDermott winning CoY in 2013.

Uh, the final 4 run had precisely zero to do with the award, as it is given out a month before that even happens.

The only thing that makes one "worthy of the award" is doing a better job than the other coaches up for the award. It really doesn't matter if UNI went 29-1 and AP ranked #2 or 18-12 and unranked -- in both cases Jacobson would deserve the award if that performance was better than the other coaches, and would not deserve it if it wasn't.

As for having nothing to do with last season, two thirds of the criteria that you yourself just listed has Jacobson as the second best coach in the league, and the third he's tied in. You couldn't list one single factor that backs up Jacobson winning the award.

UNI's performance this year was a fantastic achievement, beyond any doubt, and an excellent coaching job. It just wasn't better than WSU's or Marshall's.
