However, I keep seeing that there is this rivalry and I'm not sure why this is the case. They don't seem to be geographical reasons. They are two States apart. I notice a lot of really bad things said on both of their team message boards about the other--couldn't believe a few of the things I saw today (especially when one of the players from one team was momentarily injured and had to leave the game---that kind of thing is never acceptable). I don't see the rivalry in the players' eyes either--is it just a fan thing? I heard that one of the Illinois State coaches wouldn't shake the Wichita coach's hand in a game earlier this season (not sure if that's true or not) and that fans threw things at the Shockers after a game a few years or so ago in Normal (also, never acceptable). What got all this going? With civility, can anybody clue me in?

It's right here.

UNI will slaughter Illinois State and you'll be celebrating all the way to the CBI.

Thanks for the link. I can see why Cotton, from WSU, might still hold a grudge against ISU since he took that Kung Fu kick to the body (saw a video of that recently--wow). I don't see many of the other players into this "rivalry" (from either school). Marshall seemed to be trying to bury the hatchet with handshakes earlier in the season..doesn't appear that it was always returned. As far as any "dustup" between coaches, that sounds like a lot of speculation. It seems more like a fan thing to me...just not sure why some of the fans are so hateful to individual players--that doesn't come out in the link.

There is animosity on both sides. Wichita fans feel ISU played dirty in St Louis Janks final year. ISU fans are upset with the way Marshall cried in post game. Teddy Hawkins upset some. Dana Ford leaving Wichita to go to his alma mater upset some. The kick. The speculated dust up after the kick game.

Both fan bases got along great prior to these events.

I would caution anyone against believing a word championz says. There are many quality Shocker fans that can explain their side much better.

If we lose tomorrow we should be in NIT. Was nice to see coach muller out coach the Almighty Gregg tonight. Good luck in the NCAA tourney hopefully they don't screw u guys with matchups like last year

Jerry Palm has Northern Iowa at a 5 seed and the Shockers with a 7 seed in today's predictions. The Shockers' seeding seems crazy to me.

There was (and perhaps is) animosity between coaching staffs...specifically noted by the near altercation. Both fanbases feel that "their guy" is in the right and the vocal minority for both groups continues the hatred with irrelevant inflammatory posts.

Not all that surprising. We all know how good Wichita is and can be, but their resume is weak. Their potential for marquee wins were all losses minus UNI. Potential good wins turned mediocre (Alabama).

Going into the tourney disrespected isnt a bad thing. Worked quite well a couple years ago.

I think this is very fair.

It really all comes down to that tourney game. Wichita State fans carry a grudge for what they see as dirty play, Illinois State fans carry a grudge for what they see as an unprofessional reaction by Marshall. Then additional stuff gets used to justify what's really a problem over a single game.

Personally, I only have a problem with a chunk of Illinois State fans in general, and one would only have to look at the Illinois State board's gamethread to see why. Refer to the point where any time a WSU player gets hurt, they're told to "get up, bitch." Or the numerous times Illinois State fans have accused Cotton of "flopping" after being kicked in the chest. Obviously that's a minority, but that minority is not policed at all.
