Scouting the new players this summer

There was a good scouting report on the new beats players in the recruiting section. Now might be the time for fans to update the rest of the league on the development of the new recruits.

For WSU:
Top 150 freshman guard, 6-3 CJ Keyser is very athletic with a marginal shooting touch. He is battling a stress reaction.

The nations leading scorer, 6-5 freshman PG Austin Reaves had off-season shoulder surgery and is side-lined until August.

RS freshman Lwndry Shamet is back and battling for time as a PG.

Peyton Allen started at Texas A&M as a freshman and will be a sophomore at WSU after a transfer year. He is said to be very skilled, but lacks lateral quickness.

Daishon Smith is a very fast JUCO PG. He has trouble slowing down.

Darral Willis is a 6-9 JUCO forward. He is battling for a starting position at the 4/5 and is a skilled offensive player and a rebounding ball-hawk comparable to Carl Hall.

Solomon Hainna - 6' 7" PF, Midland College, Midland, TX. He looks to have a decent mid range game and looks athletic. May have 3 years to play. played 1 year @ JUCO. 25 years old Air Force Veteran.

Dalen Traore - 6' 9", 230 lbs, C, Miami Dade College
Northwood Temple Academy, Fayetteville, NC
Hometown: Petit-Badien, Abidjan, Ivory Coast
Runs the court, can dribble, set picks, knows how to roll and finish. Even has outside shot.

Dru Smith - 6' 3" SG, Reitz HS, Evansville, IN He is a very good defender and slasher with long arms.
5.4 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.6 steals

Jaiveon Eaves 6'3" SG 190lbs Madisonville KY 42% 3 point shooter. 1800 pts high school career.

Donovan Franklin (SG) - a 6’5 Sophmore, averaged 14.9 points and 4.3 rebounds per game this past season as a freshman at Gulf Coast State.

Demonte Ojinnaka (SF) - 6’5 Junior, shot 43.8 percent from the field at the junior college rank, while showing his deep threat ability by shooting 40.2 percent from beyond the three-point line. He is already college ready.

Jordan Barnes (PG) - 5'11 Freshman, averaged 15 points, six assists and two steals per game in HS. 48 percent shooter from 3-point range. Will get playing time as he will be back up point to Everett Clemons. Thrown into the fire.

Bronson Kessinger (SF/PF) - 6'8 Redshirt Freshman, averaged 19.8 points and 8.9 rebounds his junior year in HS. Suffered a season ending leg injury mid-season as a senior which drew national attention on ESPN after he befriended former Louisville player Kevin Ware who has mentored him through rehab. (Same Injury as Kevin Ware and Paul George) - He has fully recovered and ready to go.

Trey Knight III (PG/SG) - 6'4 Redshirt Freshman averaged 14 points and eight assists per game as a senior in HS. Must find rotational minutes along with Paige.

If Kessinger has returned to form be on the lookout, then Jordan Barnes. We will see how Barnes runs the team when he is in. Not a newcomer but we got back Bell back from injury. Sycamores have a deep team this year so we will see how the returning players and new players mesh.

For Drake, I'll base my reports off what I saw in the Capital City League, a summer league with Iowa State, Drake, juco, D2, D3, former D1 players.

Detae McMurray---6'1" juco point guard. Really didn't do much all summer until Sunday. Sunday was the semifinals and finals of the league playoffs. He led his team to the championship by leading them in scoring in both games. It was really hard to judge him as a point guard, because his team also had Iowa State's Monte Morris, who is one of the top point guards in the country, so Detae didn't really play the point very much.

Good quickness, long arms, good leaper. Can shoot well enough to keep defenses honest. Seems like a good defensive player, but that's real hard to judge in summer league, where there is no help defense at all.

TJ Thomas---6'8" juco forward, Very long, very athletic (jumped over a 6'6" guy in the dunk contest). Can hit an occasional 3, but not a consistent shooter. Very skinny, and game isn't real smooth. He might be too skinny to play the 4 and not a good enough shooter to play the 3. But, his length and quickness is something Drake desperately needs.

Johannes Dolven---6'8" redshirt freshman. Led the summer league in rebounding with 17 per game....second best was about 12 per game. Can rebound, has a decent midrange game and good post moves. But, not athletic at all, and probably will have a hard time defensively.

UNI--Based off Prime Time League that includes UNI, Iowa, and D2, D3, etc

Juwan McCloud--5'11 150 PG, Germantown, WI-- Will start from day one, best point guard in the league and not close. Great mid-range game and good shooter, can also get to the rim. Feels game really well. Needs to get stronger, but he's got a shot to be multiple time All-Valley

Isaiah Brown--6'5 180 Wing, Flower Mound, TX--Lanky, athletic. Good shooter and promising defender. Needs weight and experience but very promising prospect. If he wasn't from Texas he probably redshirts, but you can't bring a kid to Iowa in the winter and tell him to sit.

Justin Dahl--6'11 265 Center, Carver, MN--Coming off redshirt. His quickness has improved greatly since last year and he's just in better shape. Really nice rebounder and good defender. A bit raw offensively, but certainly provides size that Koch and Carlson lack. Probably a 10 minute a night kid at this point.

Spencer Haldeman--6'1 195 Combo Guard, Peosta, IA-- Really good scorer and can run the point if need be. Good first step. Raw defensively, but Jake always fixes that. 15 minutes a night this year. Pretty bright future.

Hunter Rhodes--6'0 175 PG Kirkwood Community College--Tough, good defender. Winner. Certainly brought in to mentor McCloud and will give 10-15 at the point to allow Wyatt Lohaus off the ball.

Jordan Ashton--6'4 210 Wing Iowa State Grad Transfer--Brought in to be another long wind defender to complement Morgan. Handles the ball really well and above average shooter. His value is defense and its really tough to judge that in a pick up league. He'll be a contributor.

Lincoln Conrey--6'7 230 PF Waterloo, IA--He's a walk-on. Still a ways to go, but you never know in a couple of years.

Two others aren't playing in the Prime Time Leauge.

Tanner Lohaus 6'7 210 Wing is a very highly thought of baseball player that stayed to play with his high school baseball team. He is definitely a redshirt. Jake thinks that he will really blossom once he focuses solely on basketball and yes he's Wyatt's brother.

Luke McDonnell--6'10 220 PF Dubuque, IA--Had knee scoped in March and is taking extra caution not playing. Almost played last year but they decided late to redshirt him to add weight. Very gifted in all facets offensively and shoots well enough to be a real matchup problem. He is very, very similar to Adam Koch in how he plays and feels the game.

Man, we're young, but we're also more talented than we've probably ever been.

I'm really excited for McCloud. Sounds like he's been schooling those Hawkeye boys night in and out (although I don't think Jok has played yet).

Maybe in a few years we'll go ahead and just change the spelling of McLeod Center for him

In theory. He was underrecruited in high school because of his size. He the heaviest I've seen him listed is 5'11 and 160lbs. Wisconsin and Marquette were starting to sniff around pretty heavily right before he committed to UNI.

Even the Hawkeye fans that have watched the games have said Juwan is the best player on the court and it isn't close at times.

He needs to bulk up but he has better ball handling, speed, and vision than any UNI player I can ever remember and he has yet to participate in a college practice. He will be a multi first team All Conference player and potentially POY before he graduates, assuming he hasn't already "peaked".


BC nailed it with the youth of this team. This years freshman class (including rFr) is 7 of the 15 players on the roster (5 redshirt and 3 true freshman). Add in the only sophomore on the roster is a transfer sharpshooter (shot 40% as a true freshman at another school) that will redshirt this year and join that class. One of the freshman this year will redshirt though.

This year we have only one senior, Jeremy Morgan.
