I agree with this. He won't need to cheat to recruit/win at Iona.
The problem is the NCAA will never give him or Iona a chance to do so. In the immortal words of Tark: "The NCAA was so mad at Kentucky that they gave Cleveland State another year of probation." It's one thing to let a school like Louisville get away with cheating and snubbing their nose at the NCAA; it's another to let Iona get away with that. Show causes & postseason bans are in Iona's immediate future.
My quick reading of "show cause" suggests that Iona in theory could be penalized just because of the hire but I can see no logic for it being done. Everything that Pitino does will be studied under a microscope and everything that he mutters in his sleep will be recorded and reviewed by a full time NCAA committee. So? Risk vs reward?
As for the man himself he is 68 years old with a estimated net worth of $45,000,000. It is hard for me to imagine a man in that position rehabbing himself just so that he can get back to the top and resume cheating.
OK I have never met him and have no idea how his mind functions. Seemingly he is like some others in government in that they order things accomplished without wanting to know any details. But! What will this man want written on his tombstone?
Even if the NCAA doesn't penalize Iona with a postseason ban specifically, if they give Pitino a 3 year show cause on say October 15th, 1.) Iona's season is immediately in jeopardy, especially if they don't have a ready and capable coach in waiting there and 2.) their entire 2021 recruiting class goes up in the air about a month away from signing day if Pitino's future becomes murky there.
